Question How do i get the unused buttons to work for me?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    hey guys,

i want to install a 12v switch in the buttons that arent being used next to the fog light buttons in the dash. or some how put those un used buttons into operating status so that i can use them for my 12v lighting project.

how do i get to those buttons?

how do i remove that section of the dash so that i can get to them?

can those buttons actually be put to use? or are they molded into the dash?

how would i route a small wire from that switch, to my engine bay?

    Thanks alot guys.

the "buttons" next to your fog lights are dummies, pretty sure they just pop out.

you can either drill one out and put some terrible looking toggle switches in there, or get more OEM buttons. the "funk" button comes to mind.

to route a wire to your engine, (i would) follow the wires from the ECU under the dash and route it behind the gauge cluster and to the center console. then from the ECU, go out the box, behind the fake firewall, through the grommet that has the throttle cable though it and looks like more wires should be going through it, and then where ever in you want in the bay.

they are blanks that pop out. you can get oem buttons to go in place. just make sure you get one that will work for you, some are ground loop switches. you can also use the 75X post under the drivers side knee bolster but it is switched with the ignition

Depending on which switches you have, I have a bunch for sale. Once I am home I can send you a pic to see if they are the same.

How cool would you be if you wired on of the Switches to turn your car on??? lol. And label it something weird so if someone tries to steal it they won't know how to turn it on.

For the facelift cars you have to take out the radio and pop the trim off, very carefully cuz it can break off the clips rather easily. Im not sure about the older models though

Pretty much the same as audi til i die said on the preface lift as well.

Take the radio out, and there will be two screws holding the trim in place. Once the trim is off you just have to pull on the switches and they come out with ease.

I got the dash part out around the radio and ac controls today. along with the dummy buttons.

but dam guys....how the hell would i route a wire from one of those dummy switches to my engine bay? i know i should go through the ECU wires but where the hell do i even start?

Re: How do i get the unused buttons to work for me?

its actually not that bad to run the wire. the knee bolster (peice under the steering wheel above the knees) comes out with 4 bolts. 2 behind like plastic clip in peices, 1 under the fuse panel, and 1 on the bottom close to the transmission well.

you are then able to route the wire from the middle of the dash, above all the steering and pedal assemblies, and then into the ecu box following the path already there for the other wires.

take your ecu out, and straight out a coat hanger, and stick it down and inside, from the engine bay into the car. you can then tape the wires you want to pull through to the hanger, and pull them through easy.

here is a pic from when i had the interior panels out. I have way more removed then you will need to remove though.
