    regreting selling my avant...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a b7 A4 6mt, dolphin gray with all the usual mods, coilovers, exhaust, rs10's, chip, stereo, and i decided to sell, and was just going to get the new b8.
I like many am upset at the non manual option, i tried driving one and felt like I could settle with it. I explored options of other cars, Q7, Touareg, Cayenne.

I placed my a4 on cl and got the asking price 2 days later, now i'm like what did i do? I need to get something that makes me as happy as my old car. i think the manual option is the only option, so now i think i'm going to just get an 08 s4 avant. Basically, literally, paying for my mistake of of selling my old car by buying a new one.

Do i have any other options?

Honor your for sale add. Your integrity is something no one can take from you. The buyer met your price.

We all have these expereinces. It'll pass. I know how you feel though: I sold apristine 914. Argh!

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

thanks! integrity has come up a lot. i still have the car because he said he would come up this week end to get it, he offered me a deposit and i said no.
some people suggested that i just back out. i didnt think i would really sell it, so easy.

my thoughts are that i would rather honor my hand shake and deal with my mistake.
now i just need to make the best of it.

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

Wait, if no money has been exchanged then it's still your car. If money had been exchanged then yes that would be a different story. But there is nothing wrong w/ changing your mind at this point. It's not like you had already sold the car and went back to the buyer telling him to give you your money back.

If selling your Avant isn't want you want to do at this point, then don't do it. There is no reason why you would have to pay for a mistake you haven't yet made.

Explain to the buyer that you have changed your mind. I'm sure that person would understand, and you know what if he doesn't, what do you care? Do you know him personally?

Beside it's not a case where you're selling it someone who's offering more money, you're keeping it.

You're allowed to change your mind, nothing wrong w/ that. Integrity is one thing, being honest w/ yourself and your own feelings is also as important. Beside, as no money exchange took place and explaining to the potential buyer that you've had a change of heart, that doesn't compromise in anyway your integrity. Heck you're being truthful.

I'd say keep it. I feel the same as you...no manual option on the B8 means "no sale" for me! Stupid AOA...

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

Well everyone, thanks for the support.
I honestly do feel like i could back out of the deal. we did not exchange money but did shake on it , old school style. i feel like we have a deal, the person was an car enthusiast, He rolled up in a 88 m6, with his college age kid, both car lovers. I feel if i was honest with him he would understand. The main reason i was regretting is because I could not find something I liked, but if i get an b7 s4, what would i not like about it? i think each time i got into the car i would love it. And i am excited for it now.

the car has 68,000 miles, and i figured maybe it was time to upgrade. also i am learning about myself. I like the process of things, when i am done with the process i like to start again. so Building my car exactly the way i wanted and then selling, is maybe an expensive hobby but its fun.
thanks again, but yes maybe the deal will fall through and then i guess it was meant to be.

If you are having second thoughts then don't sell the car if money hasn't been exchanged.

Tell the buyer that you are having second thoughts and if you do decide to sell that you would contact him first.

I personally wouldn't sell mind unless I could get an B5 RS4 Avant, B7 RS4 Avant, or an S6 Avant as a replacement.

    Manual transmission only of course.

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

I just got rid of my B7 Avant for a B8 sedan.

My views so far is the B8 is better car technically. Handling and acceleration seems faster(my B7 was chipped as well). But I am detached from the car so far. I don't believe it has anything to do with the Tiptronic, which fits my lifestyle better. There are some who cannot deal with a Tip at all but I find that it has some advantages for me. Plus it is much better than the previous Tip. So my opinion would be to keep the B7 and wait for a B8 that makes you really want to upgrade.

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

i think everyone is missing the point, the guy offered money, he declined because of the gentleman's agreement

now on another side.... if you have the guys #... call him and let him know how you feel if he is a car enthusiast as you say he is, he might understand.....and as stated above let him know he will be the first person you contact......

but as winston said......... i think it would be real easy to move on for one of the cars he listed........ if you will be car less for a while, while looking...... pick up a cheap b5/6 avant and drive it till you get a replacement..... then let it become the work horse dd while you mod the new car

You are under no obligation to sell. If you really like the car keep it. If you want an S4 Avant there are several out there right now brand new with 6speeds. It could cost you a lot of money to build B7 again if you miss the car too much and have to rebuy. Ask me how I know.

Well after 3 days of no emails from my buyer I was thinking he was backing out..but nope, he's coming on Saturday. I am going to honor the deal and look for something else. I am excited but sad to see it go.

the 08 6speed manual s4 avants are on top of my list, I started looking a cayenne tonight also, there is part of me that feels like i NEED to stay in the audi family but am open to other suggestions.

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

    I think I'll play devil's advocate here.

Be glad you're in a financial position where you can afford a payment on a nice B7, be able to mod it, and at a whim, sell it for a B8.

I just took a 40% salary cut to keep my crappy job, and got given an extra job on top of the three I already do, in addition to being a service manager. Even at my previous salary, I could not afford to have a B7, let alone mod it. I'm having to scrap and scrounge and sell off things I own to attempt to get a B5. (and it's not because I live like a rock star. )

That said, Remember that there was some reason you decided to sell the car you have. Something made you decide it was a good time to sell, and you got fortunate enough to have a buyer step up to the plate and make good on the deal. These days, that's a tall order.

Heck, drive a beater until you decide what your next car is going to be. Save a few months car payments, and get exactly what you want, and then next time, you may not have to go through this remorse, since you won't want to sell it.

Just my opinion, no need to stress over it.

    Huskies/Mallamutes and Avants FTW!

Talk to the potential buyer and see if there is something you can work out. Personally, a handshake to me is a deal which means I would have to sell the vehicle. Guess I'm 'old school' like that.

On the bright side, you can find something similar to what you 'had' and/or buy/mod something to what you had or where you want to go. There are many opportunities. Just a matter of finding what you feel matches you and your thoughts.

Easy...just tell the buyer you got into an accident and the car is no longer for sale because of that.

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

    Well the car is gone!
As of about 4pm today. I have been staying up all hours of the night searching for something to replace it. The past few days i was thinking Cayenne of some sorts, but what newer? older? i did find a 08 gts in ohio that 58k , way more than i want to spend, but a manual and pretty effin, nice.
...As i drive around San Francisco every time I see an avant, I'm like "wow that's nice" if its stock new or oldm, I love it. I don't love the the Cayennes, but they are nice and i would settle for one, and the used ones are sorta inexpensive. But do i really want to be a SUV guy, wagons have way more character.
I Loved my car and i think i would like to have the same car again but a different color and a bigger engine? I know what i would need to do to it to up grade...seems like the most logical choice. right? there is a few available that i'm trying to get them to except my offers. I am feeling more happy every moment.

Well I'm embarrassed to say that i went for a one year lease on the 04 cayenne turbo. $420 month. i couldnt resist. but regret it. not that its a terrible car but the fact that i didn't get what i wanted. I rather be broke and happy, than have money and feel regretful for not getting what i want. I cnat mod it because its really a waste because its only a year and Now i feel like a soccer mom. The best thing to do for me would to wait till next fall and see what comes around. I need a avant, maybe an s4, B7 still? maybe they will get a manual in the a4? maybe an b8 sedan, the only thing i sure of its needs to be an audi.

Why did you make such a hasty decision?

I doubt the a4 will be offered w/ a manual in the avant from what I read, which is unfortunate. I'm sure that you may have some more options by next year though. Don't beat yourself up over it too much, it could be worse... you could be driving an American car!

I drove a 535i tonight....honestly hated it. Its ugly, it drives soft. The Avant felt like a hunkered down tank, nice and tight with the suspension setup i had. I am learning a lot about what i do and don't like in a car.

    Re: regreting selling my avant...

Well the story gets better or worse or whatever...

After driving the Cayenne for a few weeks and then the water pump went out. The Dealer ( at Sonnen) towed the car to them and gave me a brand new lease. I asked the financial guy what it would cost me to get out of my lease. I explained to him its not what i wanted. My heart was in a Audi..explained how i felt like a soccer mom and just wasn't a SUV guy yet. Told him my dog couldn't jump up easily. He told me that his last 4 cars were Avants and just put wife in a Cayenne. He also had a large dog and could feel my pain. So he's going to run some numbers for me.

SO ...I woke up yesterday flew to cwaudi in so cal, bought a 08 S4 Ibis, manual, avant. Almost the same car i had before, except for the obvious larger engine. and drove back to SF yesterday

I love it so much. i don't know what i was thinking. I should of just followed my heart in the beginning instead of taking the cheeper temporary route.

It was an aggressive move on my part financially to be happy. but i have faith it'll work out.
    thanks everyone for their suggestions.

All in all, things have turned out OK.

Guf - you're finally in the car that is YOU! I bet Ginger will really appreciate the lower jump-in/out height!

To everyone else who has read or contributed to the thread - I'm the guy who bought Guf's A4 Avant. I feel like I got a great deal, from a great guy!

It's a great car, and Guf made all the right upgrades/mods. I hope to maintain the car while enjoying the drive.

Once again, congrats to you, Guf. And thanks - many, many thanks.

    Regards,
    Steve C.

Congrats on the S4 Avant! Sweet car. I believe that same car was posted up on AZ earlier this month.

"Congrats on the S4 Avant! Sweet car. I believe that same car was posted up on AZ earlier this month. "

That post is the reason i knew it was there! thanks! there was 3: one in denver, one in seattle with 3000 miles, and then that one. which i didn't know about until you post. Wice the salesman there was the one that went to bat for me and after weeks of waiting and one cayenne lease later. it was mine.

    Thanks again AZ

Glad it worked out for you. There was another at Escondido Audi in December, but that one may have been gone by the time you were looking.

Actually, just checked the Escondido website and it shows they still have an 08 S4, in case anyone else is still looking.
