    B5 Aftermarket Nav/Bluetooth users

I just got an AVIC-F90BT and I installed it and everything is working fine except one thing. When I installed it I put the hands free mic in the OEM location removing the original mic that was up there. When I called someone they said that I sounded like I was in a tin can. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it because of the location of the mic?

nice, I was about to pull the trigger on a Pioneer f90bt. Mind I ask where you got yours at? How did you pay for installation or did you do it yourself?

    Can't wait to get mine!

yea its because of the location of the mic...the mic has to be facing you...i put mine on the steering column and it works perfectly

Do it yourself. My D3 took 30 minutes to install with a pair of scissors for wire strippers and an army knife for a screw driver. If you buy the right wiring harness it couldn't be any easier...white wire connects to white wire...yellow wire connects to yellow wire....etc. Obviously the ninja placement of the mic in the factory location might take a little longer but this is as easy as changing an air filter.

you have to take the pioneer mic apart (2 clips) and point it downwards in the factory location. works well for me.

    Re: B5 Aftermarket Nav/Bluetooth users

or drill a hole in the vented area there... and route the microphone vertically through it...

that's what i did... you'll need some stuff to keep it there though.. the car install shop near you should have some thick black adhesive that you can get from them.

i'm not sure what it's called.... sorry

    infinkc's idea will work too

I found it on amazon for a little cheaper than I got it from a local wholesale retailer for. I think you can get them on Amazon for ~$550. I got mine for $575 including tax.

I did the install myself but I have done several car audio installs before.

That is not a bad idea. RTV or similar adhesive would work... Not sure I like putting a hole in it but its still a small panel that can be replaced.

    here is my install:

Left myself some voicemails at work with the mic several different ways. The best seemed to be out in the open but not by much. The happy medium seemed to be with the mic turned sideways so one slot of each side of the side holes are facing down. Cut down on the "tinnyness".

im having the same exact issue as u. my mic sounds like a wind tunnel they say. i was thinking of putting the mic cloth over it and taping the area shut so its wind proof or w/e and seeing if that works. i also placed it in the same spot

Yeah there was a piece of felt that was over the OEM Mic. I didnt think about removing it and using it. Let us know how it works if you try it.

As I stated in another post there was not all that much difference putting it out in the open. You can call yourself (I used my VM at work) and leave different messages with the mic in different positions. The happy medium for me was with the mic sideways (taking note of the spaces in the side of the mic) in the OEM spot. There was just not a significant sound improvement over having it in the OEM spot vs. in the open.

hey bringing this back. Gettin a f90bt in a day or two. Was wondering if anyone has spliced the OEM mic and made it work withe this HU?

Just was thinking the OEM mic might be better then the mic included with the unit and if it can easily be spliced into, it could make an easier install.

I don't recall why but I do remember it not being able to work. I installed mine in the original location but did it downward (vertically) through the vent (cutting away some of the vent) and used RTV to make it stay. Some people have had fine quality with it laying in the vent horizontally but I did not. People could not hear that well or they said I sounded like I was in a box.

i did the same and it wasn't "good" enough.. so i recently relocated it out next to my V1

i'm still not convinced it's any better...

i think it's just a crappy mic one way or another..

uh no.... you already own the hardware.. install it.. you may have better results then us...

i still use mine everyday... i could care less how bad i sound as long as people can still understand me.

also, isn't it illegal in Cali to drive on the phone w/o a handsfree kit?

    do it.

how did you get yours to fit in so perfectly? on mine which is same setup u have, the bottom left corner of the dash kit will not go in. It will fit by itsels, and the radio fits with more room if needed but when they are mounted to eachother(dash kit and f90bt) it won't fit perfectly. did you have a problem like this? if so what was the fix?

Mine fit perfectly on that aspect. All I can suggest is that you make sure the wires are not jamming up behind the radio and it's back all the way. As long as your kit looks the same as mine it will fit.
