Official: Newbies with used car issues.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I decided to make a thread to post all the issues that the newbies are having with their used car purchase. Seeing as the S4's are coming down in price, there are a lot of people that have snatched up used S4's and RS4's for that matter and become official One-Ringers. However it seems like these used cars are not without their little gremlins.

Lets try and leave this thread for the problems that they are having and not the solution as their thread will provide them the answer. This thread is only to see how many problems used S4's have.

p.s. make sure that they are One-Ringers.

    I'll start:

    thanks

So on Saturday i drive to wendy's sitting at the drive through when i felt a strange rumble. I then leave and it felt like the motor was coming unglued like the piston was coming out of the block. At this point i was thinking F@%$ this can't be happening, I limp home at about idle the whole way only about a 1/20 of a mile. Before i bought the car i did alot of research here and other places so i knew there was no way i'm taking it to the stealership which is about a 1.5 hour drive from here. So in preperation i bought air filter, carbon cabin filter, oil, oil filter, plugs(iridium), vag-com, bentley manual dvd, guided fault light, anti freeze, power stearing fluid, and extra belt. I had a coil pack on that list as well and decided I wouldn't need it, guess which part failed here let me show you the log.

So since it was my plan to change plugs anyway I did so, and swapped cyl 2 pack with cyl 5 (much

Now what the hell could this be, could it cause other problems?
    What does "Redir Fail!" mean?
Could my washing the top of the motor off caused this incredibly delicate coil pack to fail?
I ordered 3 coil packs from different sources in hopes i won't be without for long.
How far can you drive in limp mode before damage?
After seeing so many coil pack failures I would think that audi would pull there head out of there asses and fix these things. Looks like a good aftermarket upgrade item, how many people would buy one that mimicked everything this one does but also acts like a multiple spark discharge system.

The car is absolutely pristine, and drives wonderfully, but I wanted to ask if anyone has ever encountered a situation where the clutch makes some sort of rattle/clanking noise for roughly the first two engagements on cold start. The noise is fairly quiet, but is audible, and can be felt in the pedal. The clutch does not slip.

I assume it's the original clutch after 48,000 miles, so it's probably on the way out, but I wanted to find out if anyone else has experienced this.

    Thanks, and happy motoring!

I'm happy I bought CarFax way back when. It also helps that I'm the second owner and the previous one did every maintenance and only drove 7k miles a year!

I don't know if the clutch noise I have even qualifies as a "used car issue." However, the problems with the intake vacuum leak and MAFS definitely did. = )

Re: Official: Newbies with used car issues.

I just bought my 2005 B6 S4 and I love it so far, but the damn drivers window just started clicking and I have to fix the o-ring problem with both headlights. Oh well, from what I read, working on your audi is just part of the love of ownership. Hey at least its worth it. I will be posting some pics later. Its stock right now, so I think its time to put some work in. Let me know what you guys think the first mods should be. Heres to many a post and countless hours on this forum...

Re: Official: Newbies with used car issues.

I will add one to this thread.

04 S4 6MT reverse lights are stuck on, searched and no one else has seemed to have this issue.

I did have my clutch replaced recently at 42k by 2Bennet in Cali, I asked them if it could at all be related and they said no. I didn't notice this before my clutch was replaced, could there be a correlation?

    Thanks in advance,

    Tiki

Re: Official: Newbies with used car issues.

I have an issue with my used B6 S4 purchase. The car depreciated so much in the three years before I bought it that I have an extra $25-30K left over in my wallet.

I'm thinking of buying a second one with the money I saved so that I will never be without transportation because of any "used car issues."

Edit: Fogging headlights, clogged slush screen, rear pads worn (48K miles)--all fixed

    2006 B6 S4 Cab, 30k miles.

Power Windows stopped working properly (left rear not fully retracted and some kind of synch issues when using the master up causing front right to go down again).

Pads worn out (put on slotted/dimpled with HPS pads instead).

Gear changer trim (CF) got loose on the outer edges causing the trim to get a U shaped form. Solvable with some superglue but I messed up causing a crack in the clearcoat/resin so I had to sand it down and rebuild it. Turned out nicer than before and I learned something new so cant complain.

Re: Official: Newbies with used car issues.

    04 b6 S4 40xxx miles, purchased at 29xxx for $28000.

During this current winter my second winter with the car upon start up i would get two obnoxious sounds. One was a whistling kind of sound that still happens every now and then on colder days and it lasts 10 or so seconds after startup and then repeats each time i left off the throttle and the rpms drop under 2k or so.

The second more serious sound is a whining noise almost like a belt and is consistent. (Sounds almost like a loud bee buzzing). I originally thought it was my serpentine belt but the sound seems to be coming from parallel to the driver side front wheel. It is my understanding that there are no belts in that region that the a/c condensor, power steering pump and other misc parts are there.

Well long story short a warm day came along i start the car and no sound what so ever. So im guessing our cars are noisy during the winter b/c i never got any feedback on possible issues.

lol a useful question for this thread. Will a 355mm BBK fit in the 15 spoke 18" Audi Titanium Wheels [Here is a picture: http://www.wheelcollision.com/wccpix/58800grey.JPG]? I know that the stock rotor size is 345mm. Just want to make sure. If width is a problem too. I do have 12mm spacers up front.

Who makes the brake kit? I've seen aftermarket brakes on the ultrasport wheels, which these are.

Re: Official: Newbies with used car issues.

I have had mine for 2 years now, 2004 (Oct 06 build I think), had 23k mi when I bought it, I now have 47k miand I have had the following issues:

Drivers side front Window regulator toast, solution was extended warranty replace it, at about 44k mi.

Passenger side muffler rusted through, Audi factory warranty replace the muffler... was like that when I got it.

Pretty much it, other than that only have needed normal maint, but I am getting close to 50k... where I have heard I need to put aside some cash for maint :).
