engine noise when below 20 degrees

Ok so when I start my car up and it is below 20 degrees the engine makes a really fast clicking sound that I have never heard before and I use to have a 1999 1.8t passat (now have 2005 1.8t A4). I can't figure out what it is but it goes away in idle after a minute or so, but then if i rev a little i can hear it again. I know these cars make some clicking normally but this is different and the normal clicking is still there. Also the clicking below 20 degrees is so fast it almost sounds like a solid note. After I let the car run for about ten minutes it goes away and seems to run fine.

Just thought I would ask you guys before asking the Audi dealer to rob all my money.

    Thanks

Re: engine noise when below 20 degrees

Is the noise coming from the rear of the valve cover? The cam chain tensioner might be on the way out. Similar to this video?

i can't really tell where its coming from but that sound is similar. the only difference from the video is that my car idles and can drive. It didn't look like the one in the video could run. also mine is clicking very very fast.

Just in case do you know about how much those cost to fix?

    thanks for your help

ok so i just talked to the audi dealer and they said it was the secondary air pump kicking in to help the car run better when its cold. just thought i'd post this just in case anyone else was worried about this problem.

What oil are you using? Brand and grade.

I doubt the SAI is kicking in at -20F. Mine never did.

20-32F.. sure. That sounds plausible. But -20? Nope. I think the dealer is full of shit.

Mobil 1 OW-40 Fully Synthetic. I live in denver at a mile high, what do you think I should use? The audi dealer said its the secondary air pump but I'm not sure that I believe the audi dealer. It was doing it again yesterday and it was like 40 degrees out
