    B6 help.. 3.0 or 1.8t?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I own a chipped 1.8t b5. My wife is looking at b6 avants. I have searched around and havent came up with much (or didnt look in the right spot).

What are the 3.0's like? reliable? solid? needs a lot of maint? what goes wrong? and either car would be a TIP.

i know about the 1.8's, i'm sure nothing has changed other then minor stuff. I know about the t belt every 70-75k (80 stretch), boost leaks happen its life, coils like to lift.

the 1.8 will probably get chipped simply cause its small in a big car.. the 3.0 might get bolt ons and that is it.

My wife is not into speed, she just wants something that holds a car seat 10 times better then my car.. are the back seats in these notically bigger? Our son is still in a rear facing and in my b5, my seat is uncomfortably pushed forward and my back is almost straight up and down and i'm 5 10.

timing belt jobs are like 2k in a 3.0. its going to be less fuel efficient.

1.8t's, as you mentioned, have small things go wrong now and then, but if you buy a properly maintained one you shouldnt have any major issues.

B6 is not good enough for you and your wife. first reason is it's small. the rear leg room isn't improved by much, so it's still tight in the back.

I suggest you to look for an A6 or something else made by Audi.

try not to scare people. 2K, that is crazy. a stock 3.0 with normal mileage only worth 9-13K now depends on condition etc. it a 3.0 comes with USP package, it will be more expensive.
my point is, if a 3.0 only worth 10K, do you think it's reasonable to do a 2K maintenance job?

OP, if you decide to get a 3.0, the TB job is around 1K.

    Re: B6 help.. 3.0 or 1.8t?

a6 is too big for her. if the a4 doesnt suite her needs, she's gonna end up buying a fucking mazda 3 hatch.. i'm trying to get her away from that.

they look like they have a lot more room.. the one we sat in had the seats all the way back up front and had as mucha s my car does with my seats in my driving position.. i'm sure if we had adjusted them to our liking, there would of been plenty of room back there.

i will be doing all the maintenance on the car, as i do my car now. So doing the t belt isnt a huge deal to me.

then B6 A4 Avant is right for her, we prefer A4 than Mazda3 anyway. I suggest you get her a 1.8T, a lot easier to work with.

B6 Avant is the best looking avant ever made.

I'd go for the 3.0, you get more toys and stuff, I think that engine will work much better with the Tiptronic box.

it being an auto, i dont want the 1.8t to be too sluggish and her hate it.. b5 auto's feel slow.. hell my 5 speed was slow before chipped. if its slow, she'll never even attempt to look at another audi.. that's her way of thinking about stuff,

chip the 1.8t and you will have plenty of juice for getting on freeways and what not. and the 1.8 gets WAY better gas mileage

    Re: B6 help.. 3.0 or 1.8t?

The answer depends on whether you will mod it imo... I bought a 2.8 B5 because I was sure I wasn't going to mod it, thought for sure the 2.8 would be enough power for me. Then I got teh bug and ended up putting a PES SC on it. If it's really for your wife, you won't mod it (beyond a chip) and just want some decent power for her and for when you drive it occasionally then go with the 3.0.

    Re: B6 help.. 3.0 or 1.8t?

i wouldnt come on here and say its for her when its for me. i have a chipped b5.

i might just go get her a 1.8t, chip it, bolt ons and be done with it. it should be enough for her.

we went and looked at some 3.0's last night.. she's not feeling the wood trim in all the ones we looked at.

I love my 3.0, then engine has been great! I am getting ready to get the TB done and the car has 97K on it. I am never going to chip another car, so I will always go with better power from the factory. I also love all the extras (memory seats, power fold in mirrors, xenon, passenger mirror tils down when in reverse, etc.) that come with the 3.0 versus the 1.8.

    Good Luck!

What are the t belt intervals on the 3.0? and i'm guessing the fold in mirrors and stuff arent standard on the 3.0, cause none of the ones we've looked at, were folded in when off.. or is it a button you have to push?

if you think the b5 auto is slow, i dont think you have driven a cvt. you slam on the pedal and it takes 2-3 seconds for the trans to think about it, then say "oh, you really did want to start moving now... ok... here we go...*chirp." here in florida around 70% of the cars are cvt and ive seen plenty of people complain about the hesitation, and how they try pulling into traffic and almost get killed because of the delay.

im sorry if i offended anyone who has a cvt, but it really is no comparison to a manual quattro. especially with all the problems with it (tcm, valve body, clutch pack, locked final drive, etc.)

my vote is to get a b6 1.8t avant. chip it, and if you must get an automatic, make sure its quattro for gods sake.
