So Who's turbo's have blown this winter?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Usually over winter time when it gets really cold we see a number of turbo lady's (some guys are Other guys are )

Anyway i was just thinking I havnt noticed that much this winter yet, until today... Mine are still going strong. But saw other posts of the turbo's going.

So I thought I'd make a post asking who has had their turbo's blow this winter, were they original k03's, how many miles on car/turbo's, and what were circumstances when they blew?

Hope thats not too difficult of questions. lol

Basically, whats your story about the turbo lady

I don't think I've gone into boost since it got cold... My car is almost at 64k miles on original k03s... I'm being really careful this winter!

Yea ive been taking it really easy this winter. I think its only seen boost twice, and that was maybe 2-3psi while getting on the highway. Im close to 160k miles on original k03's so im keeping my fingers crossed lol

Second set of turbos (replaced by other owner around 80k), car has 130k on it now, giacx 93. Turbos sound like quiet super chargers when in vacuum before the oil heats up. Likewise summer or winter I stay out of boost till the oil reaches 175, I'd like the KO3s to last till I can buy RS6s or bigger....

Wow the turbo lady really likes to strike at the most personally devastating time possible it would seem!

K03's have a personality of their own I guess.

Mine were replaced at 80,000km's by last owner (more K03's) and i'm now at 171,000kms (105,000 miles) so i've been sure to treat them right.

If they're gonna do their thing, so be it.

^^^Thats not a bad way to look at it if you have alot of money laying around or dont mind going into debt to fix your car lol

Personally, i hope mine last until i have another set on hand that i can throw in when they blow. I have 3 other cars i can drive, but id much rather drive the Audi than an E250 or 89 Bronco 2. If i want speed i can drive the Honda, but most of the time i pimp the Audi because the Honda is rough and LOUD! lol

I only redline it when the oil has warmed up, of course i've had to give it the beans a couple times to get unstuck in the snow.

I hate Chicago in the winter for that very reason. I'll admit to cheating a little and getting into boost (but no WOT) when I see the oil temps moving past 160, but I'd be lucky if that's more than once or twice a month.

Passenger side does the Miami Vice. I'll be as delicate as I can be, but won't be surprised if they go at any time.

I knew what I was getting into when I bought it.

i'm at 116k KMs and still going although its like -20 to -30 celcius here right now so i have to let the car sit and warm for at least 10 minutes before going.. even then when i'm in vacuum i get dentist drill but only sometimes no idea if thats the turbos or the tranny whining like that..

I'm not saying I have money lying around, i'd have to go in debt if mine went tomorrow.

My point is, you have to take the loss if the turbos go, one way or another (selling car for much less or fixing them etc), and it just comes as part of the package of S4 ownership as mentioned above.

I completely agree with you, i'd LOVE to have some K04's waiting around but i'm just not there yet.

lol I agree with you, every now and then when I come across a yellow light (damn camaras), I have to boost just a tad bit, otherwise I try not to. My drivers side turbo whines... a lot! I rode in the passenger side once and was like, wow this side is really quiet lol...

Knowing Chicago, our winter will last till about April

Driver side turbo started to leak oil last month and had 86k on them...so I was forced to go stage 3 unexpectedly. I was thinking of going stg 3- but said fack it and went all the way! This set me WAY back financially, but oh well...you only live once

Flying out to NY tonight to pick up my baby from SSP. Stage 3 is now complete!

If your oil cant warm up fast enough, its actually bad for your motor.

I'd suggest you put in some 0w-40. It has 0 weight properties upon start up making it much easier to push around when the car/oil is cold. This oil also gets warmer much faster. Go put some in your car, I'd really suggest it.

91,000 on the original KO3's. Likewise, I only go into boost after the oil is fully warm and I am careful to cool down as well. It never gets below 50 degrees here, so I do not have any issues with cold starts or long warm up times. Warm up usually takes about 10 minutes to get to 150-175 degrees. I suggest that people move to a warmer climate and enjoy the fruits of full boost!

lol actually its more fun to have your car warmed up and then get into some full boost when its -20 celcius.. the air is so cold the engine just loves it

really? How does the cooler air help performance? My turbos stay nice and cool with no pre cats. They breathe well

can you tell a difference of how the engine preforms when the outside temp is below 40 degrees?

Yes. It's quite noticeable. In 80+ degree weather, the car feels quite significantly more sluggish than at 30-40 degrees. There's always a substantial increase in performance because cold air is more dense than hot air. Essentially, the engine "breathes" in more air per "breath" because cold air molecules are more closely packed together than hot ones are. I hope that makes sense.

Obviously, another benefit is that in freezing weather, pretty much nothing gets heat-soaked, so the engine is always ready to rip, and the intercoolers are doing their job very very well.

Re: So Who's turbo's have blown this winter?

160 k on originals and still going strong with some mobs and I do get on my car a good amount. I think my best purchase was my remote start I start it every day 15 minutes before I leave for work and leaving from work. It also has great range so if im in the movies or the mall I start it before leaving and its warm when I get out.

Re: So Who's turbo's have blown this winter?

My passenger side is also dying a slow death, i've made countless threads about hearing weird nosies and saying there blown but they still boost. Although i think i have a leaky valve cover and intake manifold. My vaccum @ idle is always low and i've done several boost leak pressure tests. I don't even like to get into boost, as the car smells of burning oil and burns fuel very fast even when driving aroung town in 6th gear.

So right now it goes A to B just fine cause right now with 112,000 on orig K03's i'm very cautious and often when not at work I tell the GF to drive when we go places.

Yea I should probably turn my Giac chip back to stock since it's pretty aggressive anyways in terms of the spikes. Yea I'll go do that now as a matter of fact.

Turbos seem to be holding well btw.
