    Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello everyone, I bought my car with about 19K miles back in Feb. and had nothing wrong with it. Now I'm no Audi Expert but at that time the car was still a baby, 7k miles later I began to hear a strange hissing noise near the passenger rear wheel. I listened closer and realized that is was coming from the fuel filter. Now i have a habit of breaking things(lol), so i rather not touch it. Can anyone tell me whats the cause or what might happen if i don't fix it soon?( sorry for seeming like a dummy).

i would fix it soon...it could be that your filter is simply clogged...this could put strain on the fuel pump...which can lead to pre mature wear and ultimate failure...hope this helps

Re: Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

First of all, you are not a dummy and there is no such thing as a stupid question. I once asked someone if I could ask them a stupid question, and their response was, "If you can think of one!"...lol.

Anyway, your fuel filter just needs to be changed. It is getting clogged up with all the bad stuff it filters out and the hissing sound lets you know you need to change it. It's a really easy fix, just search for some DIY's, there's a ton of them. Really easy fix.

If you don't fix it soon, it will place unnecessary strain on your fuel pump and eventually cause the pump to go out too. That's a $1,000 fix, so change the filter now and you'll be fine. Don't wait to long, it's hissing because it's full and it will make the pump go out. You can bet on that!

I'll have to second what 04b6sport stated. Change your filter. It really isn't hard and there are several DIY's to help you out. Here is a little hint to add to the DIY. When you go to disconnect the lines to the filter try pushing the connectors TOWARD the filter body before depressing the release tabs. This will take the pressure off of the tab and make it easier to release. If it still doesn't release use the edge of a small screwdriver to press down on the tab.

    Good luck!

Re: Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

Thanks everyone, Now for the Fuel Pump being replaced, I remember I had just got my 02 a few years back and didn't know much about Miltek's, neuspeed's, or apr's. so a friend who had a b5 told me he did his exhaust by Shea Stadium. I then followed and went to a local muffler shop and purchased 2 Obx mufflers and got them installed. while the guy was cutting the old pipe i didn't realize that he cut the gas tank. 2 weeks later i decided to full up my tank and started to smell gas when it got to the halfway point. i jacked it up and say the slit within the gas tank. i didn't even bother to go back because i know they would say they didn't do it and i didn't wanna deal with that crap. 8 months later the pump began to buzz while the car was idling. so it went and cost me about 700 to fix. I then changed the tank which was an arm and leg to replace. so i know better now, I went out and got the Resonated Miltek Catback, noproblems yet. lol

Damn, talk about bad luck. That's bullshit to even think about a muffler shop sawzawing through someone's gas tank....wow!

When I changed my filter and the noise went away however 2 weeks later my pump went while i was on my way to work. Audi towed it for free but I think the charged around $900 to fix.

ya i changed my filter a while back and noticed a slight humming after i changed, but never really before. of course my roommate threw away the old filter before i could try putting back on to see if the humming went away. that was 4 months ago and i havent had any problems even though the slight humming is still there.

To be completely honest, I've never heard of someone NOT having noise come from the fuel filter/pump.

If anyone has no noise, post up...I'd like to know.

No noise here, I just changed mine about 5k ago
I also don't have the 4 connector type fuel filter, mine has two. And come to think of it, what are they other two connectors for?

Re: Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

Mine makes the humming/whining noise now also. Prior to changing the fuel filter the only noise was the slight charging sound, now its definitely more of a deep humming/whining noise. I checked the rail to see if there was a problem with the pump but it seems okay, just kind of odd that with a brand new filter it would start making noise, but with a filter FILLED with nasty particles, it sounded fine.

Re: Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

Since we're on this subject... what's the best way to put the filter in with minimal amount of gas spilling out?

Also, how do you clean it up afterward? Just wipe it with a rag? Do you just throw the old filter in the trash? I have never had to handle something as flammables as gas in my own garage before.

I'm coming up on 70K and will be doing a lot of stuff. This will be one of them.

    Thanks!

Re: Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

take your gas cap off to release some pressure.thats about it as far as preventing gas from spilling, i guess you could pressure the shrader valve on the fuel rail to release pressure from the motor side. not much comes out anyways. just wipe it up with a rag, you will be fine. you can throw the old filter in the trash. i put mine upside down in a cup to let as much ouch as gravity could take, i pushed some compressed air through it as well. let the gas evaporate a little out of it then toss it.

Re: Fuel Filter began Hissing, why?

Another good tip for the install is to swap one connector at a time over to the new one. You'll have two filters hanging there for a few minutes, but it will ensure you don't hook it up wrong...like so many others have. So go one connector at a time and you really cannot mess up the process.

I can hear what sounds like a hissing noise coming from the filter outside the car while it is running if I get close to the PS rear. Is that normal?

Mine hisses/whines when it's cold outside. When it warms up past 40*F it's quiet.

Really? That's what this whole thread is about.

If the filter is hissing, you need to change it (if it hasn't been changed in a while). If you don't change a clogged filter it will make the pump go bad.

As I mentioned above, I've gone through a few filters and a new pump and mine still hisses...just something I've learned to live with.

As far as I can tell, loosening the gas cap before changing these things doesnt do a damn thing. I still get sprayed with gasoline everytime (done it a few times). My suggestion is to get a big plastic bag and cover your hands while you disconnect the lines. Yeah and I change mine every 10-15k or so and have had whining since the day I bought the car (bought at 15k, now at 65k). I just deal with it (cross my fingers) and do my due diligence on changing the filter every now and again.
