so i was driving normally the other day when i felt a jolt and my car started to make a loud clicking noise that came from the engine. took it to the shop they said it sounds like either a rod or bearing broke and that my engine is fryed.... what are my options? i know i can get a junk yard motor and swap the goodies from my engine to this one. thats what the shop recommended. i want to know what other options i have. i have little to no expierience with doing a swap myself. and the shop said they have done many 1.8t salvage swaps.

    can i do anything else?

keep in mind i cant spend a fortune. im in college and will eat even less now that i have no money... oh and for those of you who did the poll on my paintjob... all the money i have saved for that will go to this... which isnt even gonna cover it most likely. i have around 2500 saved so far.

well you could go with a junk yard motor, which might take up every bit of that 2500. Or you could try and re-build the motor you have. Personally, thats what i would do. The cost might not differ that much, but who knows, it just might be something small that you could replace and be done with it.

As for the experience part, take this as a prime opportunity to get some good experience. If you run into a problem, just post up.

I started some work this car tonight. Dane dropped it off around 6. My GF called and said shes watching movies with her girlfriends so I went to buy beer and started the tear down around 7:30. I worked on it till about 10:30.

I popped the hood and immediately knew i had to clean and degrease the manifold and valve cover. yuck

it doesn't look bad, but up close

    h
    After some elbow grease...much better

    Cleaned parts + GT30R

    How I left her.

Pretty much just ready to get picked out. Got the majority of the bell housing bolts out and I just need to get to the stubborn cat bolt and the bottom bell house bolts.

I've done this so many times I can almost nap and wrench at the same time. Matt (njm23) came over in the morning and we pulled his motor and swapped my old aeb into his car and he drove home on the same day. Chris (getboosted84) came over at 9am and we pulled his motor, installed new rods, re-ringed it and reassambled his motor. Then we installed it and he drove home at 4am to an upset fiance =).

30R huh? Better make sure to get at least a set of rods in it before it goes back together. :)

Re: and it went boom. crack crack crack crack...

30r is for my avant and the motor is already built with scat rods. Shameless plug pete, just shameless =) I did just get my nice order of fittings I needed. Those oil cooler fitting adapters for the -an oil lines on the 06a blocks are clutch though. IE has the fittings and the rods you need!

Dane has another AEB motor we are putting in, so we'll find out the condition of his existing motor when i pull the head and drop the pan. I'm guessing its a blown piston since the car won't even start. If the crank and the head look ok, it might be a decent build candidate.
