    Avant tailgate rattle

    Hi all,

Recent new owner of a 2008 Avant and have a question about a rattle coming from the cargo area that I perceive to be from the tailgate latch area. It doesn't occur on smooth roads or roads where both left and right tires hit something at the same time, rather a bump that "shakes" the car because tires on one side hit it at a time causes a light rattle. It's not too annoying, but might as well have it looked at next time I'm at the dealer.

Anyone have a similar issue and had it fixed? At some point I read a review of a B7 Avant by a major website and they mentioned hearing a few rattles in the avants they drove...

    Re: Avant tailgate rattle

I have had two avants now and both cars had a few more "rattles" than the sedan counterparts. All I can figure is that the body has a little more flex from the B post back because of the hatch area. I especially notice it when pulling out of parking lots at an angle across rain gutters. Hope this answers your question.

Yup... Have the same rattle/creeking sound coming from my hatch too, I just turn the radio up on really bumpy roads.
Old enough to know better... Young enough to do it again, just getting harder to recover.

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I figured. It makes sense, wagons can't really be as stiff as a sedan. No big deal, it's pretty quiet and like you said you can't hear it over the radio. I won't worry about it...

    Re: Avant tailgate rattle

Same here... glad to see I'm not the only one hearing it. The wife thinks I'm paranoid/schizo anytime I go:"sshhh... do you hear that?"

I'd say my car does more of a creaking sound than a rattle. I thought it was the rear seatback latches that creaked as the body flexed on uneven bumps so I sprayed a little Jig-A-Loo & it seemed to quiet down for a few days... but now it's back.

Could also be coming from the retractable cargo cover assembly: that thing is HUGE compared to the one in our Jetta Wagon and weighs a ton. Probably puts a lot of strain on it's mounting points, which could cause the creaking. Maybe?

I'll try to get off my lazy ass and continue investigating. It's just no fun to do in -8°F temps!

    Cheers!

LMAO...people think im nuts too, every car ive had I am always telling people to listen for shit and they think im nuts. i cant stand vibrations/squeaking so im always listening.

mine doesnt rattle, but i do get the strain/creak going over bumps, backing in/out uneven driveways.
