    T-belt job Q?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so I'm in the process of doing the t-belt.

Half way through removing the lock carrier (i think that's what its called. the frame that holds the rad, rad fans, etc...).

Well in the process of disconnecting all the lines and what not one of them contained oil. The line seems to be connected to the rad

It's on the passenger side, two lines top and bottom. WTF

Is this some kind of oil cooler? Please explain. Engine oil or trans oil? (I'm TIP fyi)

I did manage to spill a bit, approx. the size of a small to medium dinner plate on the ground.

I hope its not tranny fluid, it a bitch to fill

    Re: T-belt job Q?

sounds like the lines for your power steering cooler.

    ***EDIT****

Just read this again and realized that the lines for the power steering cooler are on the drives side. i just did my timing belt this weekend and didn't have to disconnect anything like that on the passenger side. Only thing I can think of is maybe the AC lines going to the condenser

    Re: T-belt job Q?

yeah thats your trans fluid. you have a radiator/ Trans oil cooler all in one. Thats why its 200 bucks for a new one. you really didnt need to remove the radiator though. As long as the support top bolts are out and the upper radiator hose is disconnected, then it will slack forward enough to give you room to swap belts.

    Re: T-belt job Q?

You know by 2 lines he might be think this

the top one is the radiator hose

the bottom is the boost hose to the intercooler. They are almost one over the other

I just did my Timing belt and i dont think the power steering cooler u can unhook behind the radiator.

i had a small amount of oil also come out of my lower boost hose.

If you are having problems doing your timing belt send me an email and i will give u my number u can call me since i just did mine on Saturday

    Re: T-belt job Q?

The 2 lines are the transmission oil cooler input and return lines, to be safe you should (if not already done), clamp down the 2 lines at the rubber part, with special clamps made to cut flow in disconnected hoses. you will lose a little fluid from the 2 lines and you will also lose some oil from the rad, when you are ready to put it all back together, use a small hose with a tip at the end ( you can use an empty bic pen) and fill the rad back ujp with the correct audi auto trans fluid, I usually fill it until it begins to leak out, (I also use a small pump I got from the local hardware store used for pumping liuquids out of barrels) you can do the same to the hard lines if they were clamped closed, this way your tranny fluid should be back to the right amount or very close, do not fill the 2 lines up if they are not clamped off because you may overfill since the oil will be going to the trans.

This is usually how I do it, if you are worried you could always check the trans fluid levels once the timing B is done.

this is correct. I did not undo it the last time I did a tip timing belt. No oil should come out anywhere. Were you talking about the rubber hose? The other thing that is connected to the front is the boost line for the intercooler. It is cast into the front end. Just tighten that back up

    Re: T-belt job Q?

Its deffinatly a oil line. I was pritty sure it was trans fluid that came out.

Its just cought me by surprise. Its odd that the trans cooler and the rad are all in one

The top line was fine no oil came out, just the bottom one.

I still have some transfluid left from when i changed it so i think im goina try to pinch off the lines so i can remove the rad support.

    Thanks for the help AZ

just hook the lines back up, you dont need to drain any trans fluid when you do the TB

That is the trans cooler lines, on the passenger side of the rad, there is one on top and one on the bottom held in with a torks. If you disconected them already, then doi as I said before and just be sure the fluid levels are ok once you are done, this is only for auto trans models, it is common to have a trans cooler integrated into the rad on auto cars, domestic or import.

    Re: T-belt job Q?

reddish color.. if its brown it needs to be replaced.. do a filter too! If its reddish brown your still good but would recommend a trans. service sometime soon. If its black...ur screwed haha... don't replace it! you will kill your trans. Just keep the black fluid and your trans will last longer than if you change it.
