Black Smoke After Takeoff Around 5k-6k Rpms... Why !?!

    soo, my whip is a BONE-STOCK 2005.5 2.0T Quattro non-S line, automatic, with 30,100mi.

i pull up to the light right next to a 2007 m. cobra when i hear it reving like it has the runs. i pop it in Sport, let it move freely, then accelerate when the light turns green, after about 5k-6k rpms i look in the rearview mirror and i could see a cloud of greyish smoke.

next light? same thing... the gray smoke again at about the same rpm's.

can anyone shed some light? i know these cars burn oil, but wtf? maybe driver error? is that what i get for a cheap thrill? i have 6mo of warranty left on this monsta, any recommendations, advice, free parts, alcohol, gas money, X-girlfriends, anything you can offer would be grately appreciated.

did you "race" the cobra again at the next light? If so it was probably smoke from their tires lol

not sure fellas, he's launches were smooth, no burning rubber smell, more like a motor oil smell on a hot block... maybe gasket?

i wouldn't call it a race, i did cheat afterall by taking the foot off the brake and letting go on it's own b4 i gunned it. not that it matters, but i was only about a car and quarter lenght behind... 4banger power baby!

So you raced a 500HP Mustang in a Stock A4. That must have went well.

Almost any car will emit smoke from the exhaust when under wide open throttle and essentially this "black smoke" is carbon buildup residue mixing with exhaust vapors. My guess is this is what you're experiencing.

didn't go that well, hence the black smoke my A4 farted out. wouldn't you be temped if it was 10pm, only two cars at the light, he revs it like it's on crack, me thinking i'm invincible with my recently mounted Cupra R lip, so i figured "i got this fool"

so basically that's most likely to happen regularly at higher rpms/wide open throttle? the car rarely gets punched, so it got me a lil worried when it happened.

It's actually good to open your engine up like that from time to time to help clear excess carbon buildup. This doesn't mean to floor it at every red light, but it's always pleasing to do on the highway once in a while.

If you start seeing white/bluish smoke when you accelerate that's another story and is usually a sure sign of turbo failure.

thanks a million, that's good info. if one thing came out of this, is that "modding might happen" in the near future. tried to not let it bite me for the longest, but after last night, i think i might start. it's just theres no end once you get going
