My car is an 04 w/ only 23k on it and i had one crap out. When they go, they go.

If you want to be proactive you can swap them all out at the cost of about $30 per. Some guys that had one crap out while they were under warranty have had their dealerships swap them all out for free. Like the post above said, it would be smart to have one or two in your garage as backup if and when one does go. There are plenty of guys that are running all original coil packs on B6's to this day. Its a crap shoot as to whether or not you will have one or more fail..

Two of mine failed at 43K and the dealer replaced them all with new version.
On my old 1.8T I never had any problems with them but know a lot of people that blow them all the time.

I have 30K on my S4. Even though Audi say's it is unessisary to change my plugs...I will be doing so this weekend? Maybe coilpacks too? What is the correct part# for b6 S4 4.2 coilpack?
What is the best place to buy?

Audi redesigned the OE coilpacks so there is no need to get an aftermarket alternative. The original coil packs have a black top, the redesigned ones have a gray top. I month or so back i spent $45 for one at the dealer because i needed one asap, but ECS sells them for $30 a pop (best pricing i have seen). If you are seriously entertaining swapping them all out, a $30 DIY plug job is going to turn into $300+ plug and coil pack job real quick.

If replacing a coilpack is a DIY job, how do you replace them? Is there anything I should be aware of prior to attempting a job like this?

They just pop out of the spark plug bore in the top of the head. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lever the connector free. It helps to undo the nuts that secure the wiring loom below the packs. This way you can slide the connectors down and off of the coilpack(s)

I would think there is a DIY on this out there somewhere seeing that its such a common job. The hardest part is being gentile w/ the clips on the back of the coil pack when you are disconnecting them from the harness so that you don't crack/break them.

When mine went bad i was on my way home from work so i just pulled into autozone and they ran the code for me. The code tells you which cylinder is misfiring. From there its either the plug or the coilpack.

I'd love to take a course on familiarizing yourself with the 4.2 V8, so that these jobs are easily doable. I think it costs about 2 hours labour to replace them all...that's $200. If it's really as easy as it sounds, we should all be able to do this stuff.

Back when i had my Z06 my local vette guys and i would have mod days at each others homes a couple times a year. This way we could all help each other w/ projects that we were unfamiliar with that others had done on their cars. we did everything from oil changes to suspension installs. Are there local Audi guys by you that you can do something similar with? If you were local i would tell you to pick up the parts and case of beer and come over but unfortunatley you're not.

Replace coil-packs? I don't think things can be much easier than replacing them. On 4.2L it's a tight squeeze and you have to remove bunch of little things to get a nice access to them though.
I'm due to replace my intake filter and spark plugs so I'll write up the spark plugs/coil-pack DIY. You can use my intake filter DIY to help you get to them. After than it's super easy.

That's how it's done. I have never taken any of my cars to a shop to be worked on (not counting warranty/recall stuff). All mods are done by me and my car buddies

- how well do you gap and maintain your plugs
- how hard do you drive your car
- overall condition of the alternator/electrical system


A good set can last 60-80K. I just blew two on my Avant that may have had 104K on them.

I should have listened to these guys when they said replace all of them(just do it). I bought 3 of them from 2 different companys 1 showed up yesterday, replaced drove around for a few miles and no problems. Tried to go to work this morning made it about 10min from home, bam 2 more bad(I had my computer/vag in the car). Towed car home, nearest dealer to far away. Did I mention the warranty runs out today. Somebody needs to run a statical analyzes on the probability of this happening the week the warranty runs out. I swear they have a self destruct timer in these things. The other 2 packs are shipping ground and will be here sat. Well I just placed a order for 8 more 2nd day. Now i'll have 3 new spares. $23 ea from genuinevwaudiparts.com. Here is my previous post about this

oh how true that is. Mine just went out last week. I was under warranty until 50,000 miles. They went out at 50,028 miles...

You should still be covered. You could claim that during last service dealer drove the car for 28 miles and you should be compensated

First one went around 25k; and by went, I mean it was fried. Harness and wiring was melted. I noticed smoke coming from under the hood, the CEL flashing like crazy, and the car just died and wouldn't restart. that was fun. waited over 2 hours for the tow truck to come. I asked if they could replace all of them, but they said they couldn't. Well, 9k later, the second one went yesterday at 34k. Luckily, this time the car still ran and I was able to drive the rest of the way home (5 miles). It was towed to the dealer this morning. The service advisor told me hopefully, since this is the 2nd one, they can replace the remaining 6 under warranty.

Within the first 12k miles all four of mine have been replaced along with 2 PCV valves. My daughter's B6 A4 has had two colipacks replaced within the first 24k miles.
