I've been looking around for a TB kit and apparently there are 2 kinds for B6s. how can I tell without actually removing the TB cover and reading the belt. My car is a pre USP 2004 model that was manufactured in 2003. vin is WAUJC68EX4A021000

purems isn't really clear on which the TB kit fits... as far as I've seen they offer the same kit from 2002 - 2005 1.8t

I like MJM Autohaus' TB kit myself. It's one of the cheapest ones and they have free shipping.

i also got the MJM kit and it was perfect. If you don't know if you have a late or early model call them adn they will tell you. I had a late model, I have a 2004 ultrasport.

    Re: which timing belt kit

    Here's some clarification

Just pull out your VIN, and compare the numbers starting at 8E..
"4" is the year, designating 2004. And the last 6 is the build number. Higher than 191000 and it's a late build, lower, and it's an early build.

hmmm. The vin of my '05 ends in 097786 which would indicate an early build however, MJM's site states that their early build kits go up to the '04 model year.

    Re: which timing belt kit

An '05 VIN would be 8E-5-XXXXXX which is later than 8E-4-XXXXXX.
So our 1.8T AMB motors from VIN 8E-4-191001 kit is what you would want for a 2005 model.

They are. They just look different because the water pump was upgraded from plastic to metal impeller and the belts are from the same manufacturer that Audi uses.

All parts are absolutely and positively OEM (Ruville, Conti-Tech, Ina, etc), but like noted above, the water pump isn't going to be, as it's a metal impeller equipped unit. For those wanting a plastic impeller pump, we offer those in our kits, too (by request). Also, starting in the month of May, we'll be offering discounts on our timing belt kits for those with a Confirmed and Verified PayPal account (PM us for details).

I've used MJM's kit for about a half dozen or so TB jobs now, maybe more. They are my first source for OE parts these days (the free next day shipping [due to proximity] doesn't hurt)
