    shifter wobbles!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My shifter in my S has been wobbling for sometime now and now its really pissin me off. When I get on the throttle the shifter will move back and when I let off it will jerk forward a little. Sometimes right when I let off (example half throttle) it kind of feels like the car is bucking for a second. Is it because my tranny mounts? I about to pick up some 034 track density mounts but I dont want to buy them and its not the problem. Thanks in advance.

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

Could be the tranny mounts, but even new, these cars had rocking shifters..they are heavy trannys. A DTS will help too.

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

can you identify whether it is your shifter itself or your transmission? pop off the center surround / unscrew the sound deadener, and see if you can identifty anything moving by itself in the shifter area. that stock plastic ball on my shifter moves around where it is seated, making shifting kind of sloppy. it moves when i get on it, not much, but it does.. But so does every other manual car i've ever driven.

My shifter has always moved forward/back when I got on and off the accelerator. Even when practically new.

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

its a solid linkage, not cable. Physically impossible to completly eliminate the movement without also eliminating trans and subframe mount movement.

IE solid mounts. And by solid, I mean delrin or metal.

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

When I changed from stock to 034 Track Density motor and tranny mounts that helped a ton, but the last piece to the puzzle is the rear diff mount I heard from Apikol to lock it up some more. I wouldn't do a DTS just because I already have to worry about scraping my exhaust I don't want to scrape one more damn thing on my car!

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

Alright so i guess getting the new tranny mounts wont really help much. As long as it normal for these cars and everyone else is having the same problem I guess its fine. I just dont want to keep driving the car and its not normal.

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

I used to have that clunk too. 034 Snub + CAGE and JHM spacer kit and an A.W.E. DTS with the JHM poly mount upgrade eliminated 90% of it. I am on stock motor mounts as well.

    That is the secret recipe.

You also need to check if your rear diff mount is broken too. That will cause a clunking. I just upgraded to the Apikol rear diff mount and everything is very solid now. Car launches VERY clean.

    Re: shifter wobbles!!

It depends on the amount of movement, if its a great deal, then it might be your transmission, but if its a small amount, its inevitable because its awd and the way trans is located.
