in a pickle, need some opinions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i have a 2003 dolphin grey b6 a4. it's a 1.8t quattro 5 speed manual and has 98,XXX miles . i have done some mods here and there that can be seen in my sig. so here's my dilema. i have a GT28rs sitting at my house along with a nuespeed TIP.

i can spend a couple thousand for the supporting mods to get the stage 3 going like the fmic, clutch, exhaust manifold, spark plugs, injectors, and tune.

or i can use that money, sell the turbo and TIP i have, and my car to get a new car with less miles and allready fast with big brakes and everything, like a s4 or STI

let me know what you guys thing..
    thanks in advance

sti's good performance car , but a bit plain jane if you ask me. sti's are so common around the bay area actually subaru's in general are common in the sj area.

with the s4 you get power but in the long term might end up costing more in maintenance / repair work.

i would personally stick with the stage 3 , its enough power to hold you over and its not as costly as the S4. ++ very few stage 3 B6's around the bay area haha.

STi is all out performance but you're sitting in a crappy tin can. I can hardly tell the difference from a civic when i sit in one. You can add power to almost any car but you can't add class/luxury.

S4 would be the better choice.

well with the stage 3 comes many problems, i like the audi becuase it looks great, smooth, leather interior and has a nice back seat

but the sti is built for speed and to get railed on, the a4 isn't really.

im not a big fan of the b5 look, but i like the potential with the 2.7t.
the b6 looks great, and sounds amazing with straight pipe, but then i can only mod the motor a little, unless i'm wrong.

2.7t if you have loads of money to maintain and mod.

b6 if you want a moderately fast car from the start and limited mods

that thing is sick! i'm not too sure if i dig the yellow, but thats the kind of s4 i'd get. and i agree with ONCEFOR, i don't have the patients to look for a b5 with low miles, and then spend all the money to make it fast and deal with maintenance.

Re: in a pickle, need some opinions

if you want serious potential, in a serious money pit go B5 S4. my recommendation is to go B6 S4 and skip the STI.

    1. STI is fast bu not luxurious at all, coming from an Audi you'll notice a BIG difference.
    2. Current B6 A4 has a lot of miles and with this comes maintenance $$$, especially if you were to BT the car. Once you add power everything that was on the verge of going will definitely go very soon after the install.
    3. B5 S4 is a money pit with serious potential, and a very dated interior/exterior.

The B6 S4 doesn't really have any reliability issues, especially in comparison to just about any turbo car. It's also one of the most beautiful cars on the road (and fast!). Right now is a good time to pick one up for cheap with gas price uncertainty, the economy, etc...

i used to hate bright colors too but it grew on me and that yellow is pretty rare. Even though its yellow the S4 pulls it off. The B5 S4 is too much work and money but id take a stage 3 any day if youre a good mechanic. The B6 S4 is a good all around car but it eats gas and less mods since the 10k supercharger is the only way to go.

that's exactly what i was looking for. i definitely want to keep the luxury i have. i'm not really looking for serious potential, im a college student just trying to go fast

and it's a good thing gas prices are down right now, that v8 is a beast compared to my 1.8t.

"All those miles?" Seriously? 100,000 miles on a modern car is nothing. In fact, 100k on anything made in the last 40 years is nothing.

I agree that the car will definately last far longer than 100K. But it's not like 100K miles is a drop in the bucket. It really boils down to how well the car has been taken care of. That's what I was getting at.

yeah i'd rather have somthing stock with great performance. i could put the money into cosmetic things rather than performance and then have to deal with all the hassle. if i were to go with the b6 s4, i still would put intake exhaust and a tune, theres not much more you can do performance wise unless i were to drop 10k for a supercharger

Im having the same problem you are. And I also live around you (sunnyvale). But i have come to a conclusion of keeping the audi. Or if you do keep it 4door German. My buddies have STI's, some evos and s2000's and they often get harassed by the cops all the time for no reason (exhaust, to low etc...) especially Sheriff department around Saratoga. im sure you have not gotten shit in your Audi. All my STI buddys make fun of the Audi cause its slow but they love it cause its german and its got class. Its more baller....the way they put it. And since its quattro i can still show some of them off up Hwy 9.....i mean down sorry. I cant keep up with them up but i own going down

i live in sunnyvale as well lol. i haven't gotten anything for my audi, and it's kinda flashy. but the one time i did get pulled over, was by a sheriff in saratoga lol. i'm all for having class and the girls seem to like it a lot as well but the car is super heavy and lacks speed. i'm going test driving tomorrow to check out b6/b7 s4's, E46 m3's and even check out the STI/EVO cars. but i really plan on having something AWD. i would love to have a 335xi, but thats out of my league..

If you want the peformance plus the class go with a b6 s4. If you want performance plus shitty looking interior go with an evo or sti. think of it this way what would you prefer leather recaro S4 seats or cheap shitty looking sti seats

    Yep, same thing i'm thinking.

I'm the opposite, i'm cosmetically done with my 1.8T (unless a S4 rear drops from the sky).

Just need a fmic and i'm pretty much done.

B6 S4. Its quick bone stock. Has great looks, a nice sound, a very broad powerband, big brakes, and the recaros make the interior that much nicer than an A4. IMO all it needs is an exhaust, suspension, and a few minor cosmetic mods and its an awesome car.

Re: in a pickle, need some opinions

I too am having a very similar dilemma.

I have an 03 a4 1.8t quattro manual with ~61k miles. So far i have it on rs4 reps, tinted, revo stage 1 w/catback magnaflows, clear corner/blackout grill, already have the timing belt done. I also have a SQ stereo system (12" Fi Q and CDT ES-620 Components).

I love my car, i think the b6 is one of the sexiest cars around. It looks great inside and out, and everyone else always compliments it. My main problem with it is that it is too slow for me. It's a heavy car so it needs a lot of power to get it moving the way I'd like it to. So my options are:

    1. Continue modding - starting with supporting mods eventually ending up with something along the lines of a gtrs/71r/3076r

    2. Sell this and get a different car. I just think it would be rare to find a luxorious, fast, good looking / handling car in my price range.

I am trying to figure this all out before I commit and spend another $4-5k on mods and a new turbo haha. I think it would be a lot more fun to just make this car fast, because I think it has great potential. With good suspension and a nicely tuned big turbo you could end up with a car that handles great, rips it, and looks great inside and out at the same time! Decisions... Decisions....

I loved reading this thread and I'm looking forward to hearing more people's opinions. This is a lot of money we are dealing with here especially with our economy!

I've been there before...but still owed on the car (and you can't get shit for a B6 A4 on a trade these days!) and there are better cars to start with for modding for all out performance.
...so there I was...kind of stuck with the A4 (but liking it still). As parts broke and continue to wear out I just upgrade to BT supporting mods...by the time I don't owe anything on it it will be the car I wanted from the start. A good thing about you modifying the A4 you will have it just how YOU WANT IT and not a factory run of the mill everyday STI or EVO.
