So today I got motivated and decided to tackle the rear valence. I've been tossing the idea around for a while but never had enough down time to do it. I was also dreading the idea of painting it while still on the car since it doesn't detach like the B7 guys.
Here we go:
I followed MOFSTEEL's technique verbatim (minus #1 of course).
STEP 1: Removed rear valence (Start by removing two tabs on one side and work your way to the other)
STEP 2: Wash valence (I used dish soap so I could get as much grease and dirt off as I could off before moving on)
STEP 3: Clean with Acetone ( This is to remove anything the soap didnt get)
STEP 4: Wet sand with 800 grit (Make sure the area is always wet and lightly sand the area you're going to paint.)
STEP 5: Clean with water then dry
STEP 6: Clean with Acetone again
STEP 7: Spray area you want to paint with Duplicolor Adhesive Promoter (This will help the paint adhere to the plastic... I used 4-5 light coats)
STEP 8: You are now ready to paint. I used Duplicolor Bumper Cover. (I lost count on how many coats but I used very light coats so I could avoid overspray.... Basically keep adding layers until your happy)
necessities:
before starting:
(I know my registration is expired. New one is on it's way..no flaming!)
I cleaned with the acetone after I washed with the dish soap, and I didn't realize how much extra crap it picks up:
So now for the annoying part; taping everything up:
I was deadly afraid of over spray, so I went the extra mile:
Some might think that's a little excessive, I just call it covering your ass (literally ).
Wet Sand:
Recleaned with water then acetone. Again, the acetone seems to really pick things up that water may have missed:
adhesive promoter:
Then paint, and take your time! I left about 30 minutes in between coats. Being that you're painting this while still on the car you'll run into some awkward angles, but if you lay down, all is well. I opted for the black satin look as well, so no clear coat.
finished product:
the lighting makes it look like there's some weird patches along the valence and bumper and valence itself, but it's just gunk buildup/reflection from the ground. The edges of the are perfect.
