    Intake manifold bolt removal/installation order?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I need to replace my broken crankcase breather hose which broke while replacing the cracked T junction above it. Since it broke there seems to me a pretty good chance that some plastic parts fell in as I removed it. I thought I could do the original repair without removing the the intake manifold, but now it seems that I must so I can get better access to the oil cooler for inspection and removal broken breather hose and installation of the new one. I have never removed an intake manifold, it doesn't look that bad to me. One question I had was whether the removal / install bolt order matters? I know it does on the head, but was not sure about the intake manifold.

One other question: Is it normal and expected for the breather hose to be lined with build-up?

    Thanks,

    James

Does not matter on the intake manifold, just make sure you torque everything evenly to avoid issues.

yah its super easy I think I had mine off in less than 15mins. The only pain in the ass is reconnecting the coolant lines

yeah - it REALLY helps to have one of these:

if you don't have one i suggest you go buy or borrow one... with that you'll be able to get the hard to reach ones AND still have both hands free to slide the hose in place

Re: Intake manifold bolt removal/installation order?

I too broke the crankcase breather, and if you are referring to the right part, than I cant see how removing the intake mani has anything to do with oil cooler

I had some plastic pieces fall into the crankcase brather "housing" all I had to do was remove the oil filter, one of the oil cooler lines and then just removed the big nut from underneath the car.

Unless I misread you first post, I dont see how removing the intake mani will help.....

Re: Intake manifold bolt removal/installation order?

I was referring to the breather housing and not the oil cooler, sorry for the confusion. I was reading another post about how to replace the breather hose and it mentioned removing the intake manifold to gain better access from above. I can believe that it would be easier since getting to it is a real pain. The post mentioned that it's highly likely that pieces will break off and end up in the housing and that the only way to get them out is to remove the housing which again required removing the intake manifold.
Here is a picture of the broken piece still stuck in the breather housing.

If I can remove the pieces without removing the housing and cleaning it that would be great. There is a large bolt on the bottom front of the housing, can I remove that and flush the pieces out?

If there is a better method that someone has used please let me know.

    Thanks,

    James

/\ That is EXACTLY what happened to me....there is no need to remove the intake manifold what so ever....just remove the coolant resevoir and that is more than enough room.

I had to remove my intake manifold. It was quick simple and to the point. I too tried to do it without removing IM, but I didnt have enough room. I had to use needle nose pliers to remove it.

Im kinda pissed though because It didnt seal properly and Im still getting the nasty smell. I think Im going to put silicone around it to better the seal.

Re: Intake manifold bolt removal/installation order?

Thanks for all the responses so far. One more question. For the folks like me where the breather hose didn't come off in one piece how did you ensure that no small pieces fell into the housing?
    • Did you remove the breather housing and clean it out?
    • Pull the plug from the bottom of the breather and fluch it out with something?
    • Drain the oil?

I'd rather not take things apart that I don't have too, but I will if necessary. I just don't want to spent all this time and money and not do it right.

I read on another post that this problem on my year is covered by a recall. I didn't know that when I took it a part and it's not going back together until I get a new a part. You guys think the dealer will give me the part instead of needing to install it themselves? I kind of doubt it, but I have never tried to do that before.

    Thanks again for any recommendations.

    - James
