I can see how it could have been an accident/mistake by a rookie tech, but this is definitely a stealership moment.

I could see this from both angles.

If i were the customer, I'd for sure be pissed off, being the potential victim of a $6500 bill. He has a right to be angry. I don't know if i'd videotape the whole thing though, maybe I'd use my digital voice recorder to tape our conversation, that would be alot easier.

If i were the dealership, I would have given "best case" scenario of a foreign object jamming the sunroof, and "worst case" scenario of replacing the whole thing. Really, I'd want to hear the most likely scenario and the estimate based on that - which is why they said $6500.
You can't really predict what would have happened if Mercedes was actually allowed to do the repair, but I'd like to think they would have found the rock, charged the man $110 to remove it, and returned the $6500 sunroof without installing it.

BTW I still use the Audi dealership (Agincourt Autohaus in Toronto) and they have been nothing but good to me and my cars. Some of the people that work there are my patients too. I'd hate to think anyone's dishonest... but that could happen anywhere

funny...I had a rock stuck in my seat track on my old B6 Avant.

I told them the seat wouldn't move anymore (it was stuck all the way forward...disaster). They said it could be any number of things from nothing to about $500, but let's have a look at it before we do anything. When they found the rock, they popped it out, charged me $28 (1/4 hour labour).

I was expecting to get a call about a $500 seat repair. I was pleasantly surprised.

that would be lame and nobody would have watched it, the dealership tried to burn him and he got them back for it, as they should have.

they didn't, the rep says the mechanic looked at it, it was a big mess, and there were broken cables, etc. they implied they already assesed the roof to see if it was repairable or not and found out it wasn't. big mistake.

the chances of the dealer finding the rock and calling him up and saying "good news, you don't need a roof" are about zero. Reason being they don't want to look like asses when he asks "i thought all the cables broke and now your saying it was just a rock?" and your back in a similar situation as they were. the other reason is the parts department loses money when they have to return the sunroof they never installed, and the tech will only make .5hrs for a rock removal rather than 4 hours for a roof replacement, this shit happens all the time at dealers.

it does happen everywhere, and more frequently at high end dealers where all they want to do is replace everything because they can make more money and the customers don't complain because they have more money than the guy with a ford focus.

Simple fact is that that dealership told the guy that the roof was completly fucked. The wires are all broken ect. They were 110% trying to rip this guy off. If they would have said "a new roof would cost 6500, but lets see if something else is causing the problem". but they didnt, they said that it was all f***ed up and the frame was fucked. RIP OFF

its funny that you would quote Agncourt Audi as i found them to be the biggest ripoff/scam artists out there ..

i went to look at a 2004 S4 that they had for sale listed at 47900 the asian sales man said the best he could do was 46500 for the car after it had been sitting on the lot for 9 months so i said with gas at 1.28/l forget it .. but out of curiosity i baited them with my asian buddy (i'm not asian btw) and he pretended like he was interested the very next day same salesman and got a negotiated price of 40,750 for the same car!!!! i walked in as he was talking to my friend looked at the paper print out he had given me and told him to take his racist bullshit tactics and get the f**k out then we both left .. and since that day i have never stepped foot in that dealership again .. i dont care if my TT breaks down and Agincourt is the last dealer left in Ontario i would rather walk than ever give them a single f**king penny!!!

Whoa! Coincidence or not? Agincourt tried to squeeze about $6000 extra from you, sort of like the guy in the MB dealership for his sunroof. Perhaps that is just the standard dealer profit, mark up everything so they make about six large from anyone they can squeeze.

Anyway, that is my experience with their service dept and it's always been quite good. Sebastian always takes good care of me. Never had a chance to buy a car from them, and now, I'll be sure to stay away from the sales dept (but then again I'm asian, so maybe it works in my favour).
