    Breaking in the engine?

I have heard mixed opinions on breaking in the engine of my new s5 (manual). Some people have indicated that driving the engine hard in the beginning will allow the car to perform its best later on. Others have told me that slowly breaking in the engine will pay off in the end. Please share your thoughts on this issue.

its all in the manual. it says to go easy for the first 600 miles then from 600-1000 u can GRADUALLY up the revs.

The engine is basically broken in from the factory but to be safe they tell you not to abuse it for at least 600 miles. It is better to be safe and take it easy for that time and then gradually build up as stated above. Keep your rpms low for now no redlining for a while aha.

You should really just consult the manual. Audi engineers know best.

As long as you warm it up and cool it down you can drive it however you want to. Warming it up just means taking it easy until the oil gets up to 150.

FWIW, every engine Porsche builds is redlined on a dyno the day it was born.

    Re: Breaking in the engine?

Most of the concensus opinion I have heard is to vary the RPM a lot during the first 600 miles, nothing past 5,000 RPM though, in order to properly seat the rings and prevent burning as much oil during the cars lifetime. Long distance driving at a steady RPM during the cars first 600-1,000 miles is a no-no.
