Exclamation HELP! Jim is stuck in Lexington, KY

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Jim(AZ Moderator), aka "onemoremile" is 'stranded' 20 mins outside of Lexington, KY.

Can anybody in the area help him out?
Known issue: Flashing CEL due to a misfire.
Probable fix: Ignition control module, probably not the coil/plug/injector

Feel free to give him a call if you can help.
Here's his #616-915-.... - I'm posting this with his permission. I can't go get him or help him in person, so I'm hoping somebody from the community can help him out.

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: He's driving the 99.5 Avant 1.8T. Actual CEL/DTC is unknown. If you have VAG-Com or tools, I can walk you through the repair, or almost any other tech advice.

Im not very far either, about 2 hours away. Does he need help yet tonight, like ASAP cuz by the time I got details, directions, and tools it would be kind of late time wise. I could come up tomorrow early if that would help. I dont have VAG, but I have an OBD-2 scanner. Let me know.

I believe he said he was 20mins NorthWest of Lexington. Give him a call if you could help. I'm sure he's willing to work something out either tonight or tomorrow.

I will say this, it did sound like he needed help tonight, it sounded like his car was not very driveable.

Re: HELP! Jim is stuck in Lexington, KY

First off - you guys rock. I don't have the words to tell you how much this is appreciated.

I installed the ICM in the waffle house parking lot and it was perfect for about 10 minutes. Then got the WRX machine gun sound and flashing CEL. Although we had two cars (mine and an 06 Outback wagon) we also had a ton of presents, three people, and my 100 pound dog. We just soldiered on and made it eventually. For the last 30 minutes it drove perfectly.

When I left home the car was perfect even at WOT. Just South of Indy I hit a big puddle and bump on the freeway and it started stuttering above 7 psi. I had this problem a few years ago and the only thing that fixed it was replacing the PCV system. I kept it under 0-5 psi and it drove just fine. It wasn't until the drive today from Louisville to Mt. Olivet that it started missing so badly. The problem is exactly like a bad ICM. I've had a couple go bad so am familiar with the symptoms.

It drove perfectly for a few minutes then missed badly for a half hour, then back to perfect for the rest of the drive. I've got a 7 hour drive home tomorrow (or whenever it works well enough to make it) and can't risk it going bad again.

I'll see if my folks have tools so I can pull the plugs but they don't have much here. They have a house in Michigan and are only down here for a year to minister 3 churches so they didn't bring much more than the basics like furniture and dishes.

Fuses are fine. It seems to be dependent on load but still inconsistent. If it made sense I would have figured it out by now.

Does your car have a MAP sensor? I know it's still AEB, but it's a 99.5, so it's a goofy bastard.

Re: HELP! Jim is stuck in Lexington, KY

thats a negative, ATW motor has a map, no AEB. and it wouldn't have that kind of affect.. I had my map sensor dangling for about 2 days and had to drive the car.. There was ZERO issues besides the occasional boost hitting 15 psi for a couple seconds then dropping back to 8 (was stock ecu)

Possible fuel injector issue? just tossing ideas, i got no idea..GL with it

Cell reception is poor here so I'll give you guys the home phone number. 606-724-2542.

It has a MAF but no MAP. The MAF is only a couple years old. The entire PCV system is 3 years old and was replaced when the forged rods went in.

Re: HELP! Jim is stuck in Lexington, KY

I had similar intermittent misfire issues and it ended up being the wiring connector to my MAF... I think it was the green wire had wiggled itself loose after pulling the airbox to replace the turbo. I just crimped the wire back in tightly and the misfires went away. Just a thought, and it is great to see this community come together so frequently, whether it be stolen or wrecked cars, job or family losses, or the dreaded breakdown. I love this place!

Just a thought, and it is great to see this community come together so frequently, whether it be stolen or wrecked cars, job or family losses, or the dreaded breakdown. I love this place!
I've done a similar repair on a few customer cars. It does seem to be the green wire most frequently.

It is fantastic to see the good in people with all the bad we always hear about. I would have helped in a second if I was close to you. Hope everything works out for ya!
