warranty up: should i be scared?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
my warranty is about to expire the end of january. 2003 1.8 quattro 5 speed. i have 90k on the car, 15k on the engine (new engine, turbo, timing belt, replaced in engine sludge recall). just had a wheel bearing replaced. now im wondering if it is time to sell and buy something newer with a warranty. i just love the way my car sits with sport suspension and the sportec bumper. i dont think i would ever be able to get this stance with a different car. i really dont want to sell but they are just so damn expensive to repair. what would you guys do in this situation? thanks

You have a new engine AND turbo in that car which many people aren't going to take into account when you sell it. In addition, modded cars sell for less than stock cars and you are going to lose the money that you put into it. All up to you but IMO I'd keep it until it gets too expensive.

i bought my car just as it was going out of warranty. it's really not that bad. i do try to do most of the work myself, so that helps out. it may get pricey, but that's more because of parts than anything else.

i love my car and would rather not eat out for a while and get parts rather than anything else.

I'm sure keeping 3 Audi's at the same time is pricey.. for a nice garage.

it's not all the bad. i've learned to pick my battles in what i want to fix.

the b5 is my beater. unless something mechanical goes wrong, i usually don't bother. lately power steering has been a reoccurring issue.

the b6 1.8t is my fun car. trying to do as much as possible to it. eventually it will be a gtrs powered so it will be a fun driving experience. if something goes wrong, i try to fix it immediately.

the b6 3.0 is my cruiser. great highway driving experience. very smooth and refined and i hope it will be a joy in nice weather. nice to sit back and just drive. if something goes wrong, i fix it immediately.

just a general trend. they all are pretty similar, with differences here and there. all in all, a good transition. hopefully i'll step it up to an S6 whenever i get the chance.

Andrew, If the car is paid for there is no reason to get rid of it...otherwise, now is a great time to buy a car if you have the cash on hand. My friend just picked up a new $52K Suburban for $38K out the door (never mind the gas mileage).

Stay on top of routine maintenance. Oil changes every 5k miles (synthetic VW/Audi approved oil and large oil filter). Timing belt kit (timing belt, water pump - w/ metal impellers, accessory belt) every 60k - 70k miles. At 100k miles flush out the transmission fluid and get a new valve cover gasket. Have the front control arms inspected around 120k miles.

Ignition coils start to get weak around 100k miles of use and would be good to replace. Original OEM battery is good for 4-5 years.

Do this, and the car will return the favor with reliable service. I'm over 140k miles on my 2004 A4 1.8T.

no point of really being "afraid". Just make sure you have some money saved in the just-in-case fund.

Re: warranty up: should i be scared?

yeah i wouldn't be afraid. I have 88k on mine and my only problem is a coolant leak. Except for the fact my bumper just tore off today. But that was unavoidable in this snow. But most of the stuff is a pretty easy fix. Don't sell it just because your warranty is up.

Re: warranty up: should i be scared?

new engine + turbo means you're probably going to be a lot better off than many others with the same car. just take care of her and be on top of all maintenance and repairs. don't let something go unfixed for a while, audi's don't like when this happens...

and what's up with your sportec bumper, it doesn't fit properly at the corner?

it has a crack in it where the previous owner ran into one of those concrete parking stops. i got a quote for 500 to fix the 2 cracks and repaint the whole front. i think im gonna do that this summer.
