    Question Timing belt question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short. Im in the process of doing my timing belt and forgot to mark the lower crank before taking the belt off. It may have moved slightly while the belt was off....I'm not sure of this. Once I get everything back on, how can I make sure that the timing is good? Will just turning the lower crank until the upper timing marks align suffice or is it more involved

    Re: Timing belt question

not sure but you might have to find TDC on piston 1 and then make sure the valves are aligned according to that

    Re: Timing belt question

Put the lower cover and crank pulley back on. There is a notch in the cover and pulley, line them up and then check the mark on the cam sprocket and valve cover. If they're not in alignment, adjust, if they are proceed with finishing it up.

    Re: Timing belt question

If the cam sprocket doesn't line up with the valve cover when I put the crank pulley back on and aligned, Do I make the final adjustments with the timing belt on? Turning the crank until the cam sprocket aligns

    Re: Timing belt question

They both need to point at their respective marks at the same time. Double check them after you release the tensioner also. This is VERY important!!!!!! You could cause huge damage if not done correctly.

Oh, and to answer your question, you'll want to take the belt off and hand turn the crank and cam sprockets to match up, then slap on the belt.

I usually just set them to TDC and slip the belt on and go from there... Sometimes im dead on, sometimes I'm a tooth off. Either way, its not tough after that

    Re: Timing belt question

    that's the idea.

But in my case, I did this a week and a half ago, i marked the crank sprocket and the block as well, in addition to the cam-valve cover mark. I was afraid the crank would be off, and I was right. Slipping the belt off was fine. But putting the new belt on forced the crank sprocket to move. Good thing I marked it.

    Re: Timing belt question

Post up some pics. so we can verify the marks are correct, better safe then sorry. Also when installing the belt, make the water pump side of the belt tight leaving the slack on the tens. side.

    Re: Timing belt question

one thing to remeber when you have all the belt and tentionners in place etc, had crank it 2 full rotations to seat everything this is what VAG recomends. then verify the marks line up and then put all your covers back etc.

Thumbs up Re: Timing belt question

Ok so far so good. For good measure I spun the crank one revolution until the marks aligned on the pulley and lower belt cover. I also aligned the cam sprocket with the notch on the valve cover the same way. After I put the new belt back on, I spun the crank two revolutions and the crank and the cam aligned perfectly at the respective marks. Gonna put her back together now

    Re: Timing belt question

Finally got the car on the road. Took time out to remove that boost reservoir near the front motor mount, bypass the N249 valve, replace some vacuum lines and adjust my FMIC. After taking everything apart, It was just the O ring on the water pump that was bad....even had the metal impeller and the timing belt was only 30k miles old. Nevertheless, all is well and timing is spot on.
