pulled over - POLICE LIED ABOUT THE TICKET

ok so i was driving my girlfriend home tonight, going thru newington CT. the cop followed me for about 2 miles before he pulled me over for "unsafe lane change" (he said i didnt use a blinker when i really did, i knew he was behind me the whole time, he was the only other car on the road for miles at 2 in the morning, so i specificly signaled, my girl even saw it) but thats besides the point. i figured he just wanted to see that i wasnt drunk, which i wasnt. i was going the speed limit and everything.

he marked on the warning ticket under defective equipment: tinted glass and exhaust system.

the only glass thats tinted is the rear window. ive been to the DMV twice for this and each time they say its fine. the law says "Any darkness can be used" on the rear window. he said i need a sticker on the window to certify that it is 'any darkness'

now the exhaust i have is a milltek, with the stock cat. its quieter then stock STI's, V8 corvettes, etc. so if my exhaust is illegal then alot of other factory cars are also illegal.

MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS.

now i could either pay a $96 ticket he said, or go to the DMV a 3rd time and have it inspected. i told him i would loose more then $96 by taking a day off work to do this so i would prefer him to write me a ticket. he refused.

does anyone know how to go about filing a complaint against a police officer? im not letting this one go. corrupt police get under my skin.

Hmm, Id first get things settled with the DMV, whats done is done. He IS a cop, his word may be worth more than yours (I know, it sucks asss. But its life). Id just move along with life.

well this is the third time ive been pulled over in newington for my window tints. i origionaly bought the car with them so i didnt know if they were legal or not. the first time i went to the DMV, they found two windows were 2% too dark, so i just removed all 4. they said i could leave the rear window because it didnt matter.

i then got pulled over for the rear window not having a window tint sticker on the remaining rear window. went to the DMV, they said its fine, and signed off on the warning ticket. never gave me a tint sticker or anything.

this is the 3rd time il have to go to the DMV for the same reason, and to hear them tell me my car is legal. i waste 1 day of work each time i have to go to the DMV. they have wasted about $400 in pay so far. not only is that taxable income that could be supporting their corrupt little department, but its money out of my pocket for no reason. how many times am i going to get pulled over and written up for this?

i know the supposed "illegal lane change" was just a BS offense for a reason to pull me over and write me up for the two defective equipments. whatever, it was a warning i dont care about that part. but does someone really need a state certified sticker on the window to tell them if its in the tint range of "ANY"? yes my windows are "any" darkness so the law stated they are legal. you dont need a little machine to tell you that. he was obviously a rookie that passed the law portion of the test with a C+. good for him. atleast i hope he knows which way to point the gun.

Sorry to hear about your inconvenience. Is there even a such thing as a sticker for the tint in your state? If not, I would def. give a call to your local police department, it couldnt hurt.

yea here in ct we get to have every piece of glass with an aftermarket tint inspected and get a big silver sticker put on each window. all day long i see people with blacked out windows. my one rear window is 35% tinted and im getting this shit for it. no way.

he was on graveyard shift on christmas so hes obviously not very high on the totem pole or just not very bright.

Rear Window: If the vehicle is equipped with left and right-hand side rear view mirrors, the tinting standard does not apply to the rear most window (back window).

ah so you dont need a sticker to tell you the window is tinted anywhere between 0 and 100%. anywhere in that range is legal as long as you have side mirrors. maybe thats why their cars say police in big letters across the side, otherwise they would have no idea if it was their car or not.

Newington cops are not fun. I used to get pulled over atleast once a month in my gti for doing nothing wrong driving on the pike....and this wasnt on a fri or saturday night. this was during pure daylight doing some misc shopping.

I got pulled over in Albany while at school at 3 am. I was going slow down an empty street at 3am looking for a parking spot. I was coming to a red light and signaled. A cop pulled up behind me. After waiting at the light with my signal on it turned green and I turned. He immediately pulled me over. A second cop came the wrong way down the one way street to block it off. The cop ran my license and came back to ask me where I was coming from. I told him the grocery store so he shone a light in my windows and asked where the groceries were. I told him the trunk, which was true. He then asked if I was drinking and I said np. He asked me out of the car to do two sobriety tests. I asked why I was pulled over and he said failing to signal. I said I did signal so he said it wasn't 100 ft from the corner. While this is going on the second cop is questioning my passenger and even asked him his phone number. I got the ticket and left. The next day I filed a complaint with the police department. It's been 2 months and ive heard nothing.

Window tint in Illinois attracks all kinds of attention. Drive an Avant like a bat out of hell and only get pulled over every five years or so like me. The police do not like window tint, just remove it.

my problem is this. the wording of the law is very clear. if your car has left and right hand side rear view mirrors you are exempt from the window tint standard. meaning your are exempt from being required to have a sticker on the window.

i was told this by two seperate wethersfield DMV inspection officers.

im typing up a statement as to what happened, i have a printout of both the exhaust noise law and the window tint law, and will have proof that my car is within the law on each case. i just got off the phone with the DMV and had them confirm that my interpretation of the law is correct (recorded the converstation for evidence).

il be calling the departments chief of police and explaining this to him, and i will give him all of this paperwork. if i have to clear this up myself with the DMV a 3rd time i will be filing a formal complaint against the officer as well. and im going to have the DMV officer sign paperwork that i can show the cop next time i get pulled over certifying my car is legal. what a headache.

I'm confused here - did he write you a Complaint Ticket, or was it a written warning? And did he explain to you or write on the back of the ticket about the defective equipment? CT warnings are generally used for advisement, but they have to explain/document the warning in detail if it is not clearly obvious.

Call the Newington PD, ask to talk to the officer's sergeant, explain to him your issue and that you've spoken with DMV about the tint thing but you need clarification on the exhaust complaint (if it passes CT emissions, it's legal). RESPECTFULLY mention that you wish the officer had explained this better and explain you were driving carefully because it was Christmas, wary of drunk drivers, etc. The cop probably isn't "corrupt", he is probably just interpreting DMV regulations incorrectly.

it was a written warning. i was completely respectful the entire time, put the hands on the steering wheel where he can see them, say yes sir, no sir. the whole 9 yards, at no point did i raise my voice. i was expecting him to pull me over to check that i hadnt been drinking and send me on my way. i would have been fine with that.

he marked off on the warning defective equipment, and under that checked the box next to 'exhaust system' and 'tinted glass'. when i asked him about it he said that my exhaust was a little too loud and that the rear window needed a window tint sticker on it. i explained to him the law which says the window can be any shade of tint, and that i had been thru this with newington police twice before, even spraypainted black, completely opaque, as long as there are side mirrors the back glass is ok. he wouldnt listen to a word of it and walked away from me in the middle of my explanation.

its not a ticket that i have to pay, but if he checks off any box under 'defective equipment' i have to correct the defect and go the the DMV for inspection within 20 days. the first two time i just went and they signed off on it. it costs me a day of work each time, but no fine. this is the third time for the same supposed offense, by the same town police department. no other town give me any problems. this time they struck a nerve and im not letting this go easily.

i have a recorded phone conversation with a supervisor at the DMV restating the exact wording of the law and saying that my interpretation is correct. he further said that "it sounds like the officer was trying to give you a hard time for no reason" and that "the officer seems to have wrongly given you a violation". he is going to mail me an exact copy of the law so i can bring it to the police department. i also got the officers name and rank (patrol officer, he is a newbie) and the name of his superior who i will be calling tomorow.

for once, and il probably never say this again about the DMV, but this guy at the DMV was very helpful and it was a pleasant experience dealing with him.

The officer is just an idiot then. Get it squared away by DMV, take the print-out showing your corrections, and include that with whatever you send to the officer's sergeant. Just keep that corrective paper in your car at all times. It sucks to go through this, but they do have to deal with all the idiots on the Berlin Turnpike every single day.

There's no way if you're driving within the speed limit and in normal shift ranges that the exhaust is "too loud" - so the guy was just being a jerk. Complaints like these do get officers marked for demerits, which can really screw with promotions.

i have a problem with that as well. now i dont want the guy to be shot or anything, and i can agree that police provide a valuable service in most cases. however there are many people are are not well suited for their profession. for instance, an officer should know the law to be able to enforce it.
