Timing Belt on 02 TT Q?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The Stealership wants 1100 to do the timing belt on a 02 TT Q....That insane right? Trying to get a idea of what other people have paid. It a friends car so I'm not to up to speed on prices of the TT but seems crazy. My old GTI only ran me about 350.

    Any info would be helpful.

    Thanks!

Re: Timing Belt on 02 TT Q?

Isn't a timing belt 4-5 hours of labor on a TT? Ask them to break down the price, they might be over charging on parts. In which case you can supply your own and find a mechanic who allows you to bring in your own parts... some won't allow it, some will but offer no warranty.. some will allow it and will still offer a warranty if the part supplier is known to them and in good standing.

What I'm trying to say is.. shop around.

Dealerships always charge a lot compared to equal (sometimes better) work done at independent shops. Also, use the regional forums to find a good local mechanic.

Re: Timing Belt on 02 TT Q?

Pretty typical on P/L for the MkI TT. Even local indies are asking and getting US$950. The TT belt can be DIY, but it isn't any 4-5 hours. Trust me. Indie rates in HotLanta are running US$85 and up.

Check out the AW (yeah, the experts) forum at http://forums.audiworld.com/TT and select the FAQs shortcut at the top of the page. Within the FAQ are several DIY threads.

Do the TB, TENSIONER (without fail) and the water pump. Might as well do the crack pipe while you're there. The best kit comes from Diesel Geek: get the metal impeller w/p while you're there.

DO NOT put this off. The 180 TT TB is a hand grenade after 70K. It WILL fail.
