...as soon as he gets back the clutch is burning like a mofo. quoted at $1377 plus tax to replace it. Sound about right? For some reason I thought it'd be more expensive.

Thats not completely fair either. Its 50/50 if you ask me. OP for not knowing his roommate and/or his roommate's driving skills well enough, and the other half on the RM for blowing the clutch.

He drives a stick so i dont see how he could screw it up that bad. Maybe it was due, made it to 87k so I'm not too upset. Just wish it didnt happen on christmas eve...

wow... ive always replaced my own clutches... so yes, that sounds high... lol, considering you can purcahse about 3 clutches with that kind of money. but if you dont know how or dont have the space to do it, nor are willing to attempt a DIY, then I guess that isnt too bad, my little brother paid somewhere around 1700 for a civic transmission and clutch to be rebuilt/replaced.

As Bhvrdr has said before, parts for a clutch only run ~$350 online, plus whatever your indy mechanic charges for labor...

yea its cheaper then i was quoted i was quoted 1500 from audi 500 for parts and 100 for labor so i decided to just go with the lightweight flywheel and stage 3 clutch just to get ready hopefully for PES stage 2 supercharger

Clutch could be burning but how do you know it's shot?

i took it to the dealership, they looked at it, took her for a spin, and just told me that i need to replace it. Even if the clutch wasn't shot, it smells so bad I can't even bare to drive it.

Please.. The clutch was probably on its way out way before his roommate touched it, especially if his roommate knows how to drive standard.

There you go.. Consider yourself lucky for getting 90k out of it when there are posts here every other day w/ guys changing them at 50k.

BTW if you try to push any of the repair cost off on your roommate like others are suggesting, it would be a dick move in my book. If he offers up money thats one thing, but asking him to chip in or pay isn't right. Even if he didn't borrow it, you would be swapping the clutch out w/in the next few months anyway due to the mileage and your habits. Like i said earlier you are lucky to have gotten 90k out of it..

Agreed, the universe is inviting you to get a nice new clutch, your buddy feels bad and will always remember to let the clutch out fully a bit quicker in future. Actually, let him break in the new one!

Re: let the roommate drive the car...

I had that happen when I was in college. My best friend was test driving my ultra fast mustang gt and it went out. Honestly he hadn't done anything crazier than I did on a daily basis in that car. He felt bad, I upgraded the clutch and paid for it, life goes on. It wasn't his fault, probably would have happened if I was driving.
