Im at 5xxx miles and i noticed that problem as well when it rains hard. However, its not as bad as my 525i which is ALWAYS SQUEAKING. So yea...i just let it go until service since either brake pads are out supposedly.

    Re: brakes squeking

Its from brake dust build up on the rotors. Wash the car or hose the wheels off, it'll go away, until the super dusty OEM brake pads strike again...

    Re: brakes squeking

This topic has been covered many times in the past and a new thread exactly like it pops up about every 2 weeks. However, since it's Christmas and we're supposed to be into giving, here's your answer... This is very standard and happens to virtually all B7 A4's. The compound that the stock pads are made out of will squeak, and there isn't much you can do about it. My mechanic friend has told me that squeaking is usually a sign of a good high friction brake pad.

And also, it seems like you're lucky because it only happens to you in the rain and cold. Mine do it pretty much anytime I lightly get on the brakes under about 15-20mph.

    Re: brakes squeking

the solution is to get aftermarket brake pads and rotors. this is what i ended up doing after multiple visits to the dealer and no resolve for noisy brakes.

x2 for me with 14k miles, nothing really to worry about. I wish they were quieter, but all in all they have good stopping power so I'm happy. They are better than the A3's and certainly most domestics, which makes me nervous when I see a dodge or ford in my rearview mirror.

    Re: brakes squeking

The Mercedes (AMG) does it, the Porsche does it and the A4 does it. The SUVs we own do not squeal. That said, the A4 stops about the same if not a tad better than the S55 on the street and a bit worse than the 930 (which is lighter by hundreds pounds). Any harder stopping power on the street and my stomach would fly up and out of my mouth. The SUVs are horrible. Squealing brakes under light application is normal and is an indicator of a proper functioning brake system as has been stated.

A solution to the squeal may be to go with a good ceramic pad, but at the expense of some loss in braking performance (no matter what people may say) that may not be noticeable under normal conditions. Another solution is to completely change your brake system to larger binders and rotors with the accompanying pads to keep/improve (mildly) over stock brakes while almost eliminating the squeal. That's an expensive solution and a waste for street use.

The stock brakes are designed for spirited street performance and are exceptional in all road conditions, especially panic stops. Cleaning out the brake dust with a hose helps albeit temporarily, but so does a few hard applications of your brakes a few times on every drive (i.e. like quickly slowing for interstate off-ramps). If your driving is mostly slow speeds with light braking applications, you're going to have the squealing.

The good news: that you first noticed squealing after several thousand miles means you probably did a good break-in of your brakes and will get great performance from them for a long time before the pads finally wear out. Do some extended hard braking (stopping from high speeds) from time to time to keep your braking system in good condition and avoid lightly riding your brakes during slow speed driving; do that and the squealing should be minimized in its frequency.

mine did it...had dealer clean the rotors, didn't squeak for about a day and then came back but alot less now. I will change out the stock brake pads soon cause its just annoying.

    Re: brakes squeking

Mine didn't start squealing until 27k miles. The dealership said the same thing the second to last poster said. Do some hard stops and that should take care of it. I happen to love the brakes on the a4. They have great stopping power. Everytime I have to stop short, I always get the same reaction out of the people in my car....WOW this car stops on a dime!

That's what I tell my wife, but she always reacts like 'well you should've stopped sooner or driven slower'.

Uhhh, because the OEM Ipod adapter is pure garbage?? That, and the factory exhaust note is deeper than anything the Symphony II can put out. Mildly ungrateful with the audio.

Mine squeak 24-7 but just front left for some reason. but i did put some cheap pads on the front. If the Hawks make it go away I would GLADLY pay the extra dough
