    Filling up is slow...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    So I recently bought a 2000 a4, Whooo!

I love the car, but one of the few problems is that at the pump, I am unable to automatically fill it up. Whenever I press the lever to auto fill, the nozzle shuts off and makes me repress it. If I force the gasoline into my tank, it will overflow and spill down the side of my car. Then I need to wipeeee it down in 20 degree weather. I'm making sure I have the nozzle all the way in the car, I've filled up cars and know how to do properly do so lol.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what the problem is, and or how to fix it...Thanks in advance guys and gals, if anything is unclear let me know and I will explain better

Its the charcoal filter. Get a new one. I had the same problem, I replaced it with a used one and have no problems filling up anymore.

Mine does the exact same thing if I push the nozzle in too far. Try pulling it back out a little bit and you should be fine.

Does it to me too. When I'm up in WA or a different state I typically flip the nozzle upside down. Always works.

    Re: Filling up is slow...

the charcoal canister is part of the evap system. it absorbs fuel vapor from the tank and then is released to burn in the engine by the n80 valve which is located near the air filter. the charcoal canister can get saturated with liquid fuel if the tank is overfilled. this will cause the canister to fail and build up excess fuel vapor in the tank and filler neck, thus stopping the pump. it is a very common problem for the b7 2.0t's when they first came out but they may have updated the system since then. i know for a fact the charcoal canister on the b7s is on the underside of the spare tire compartment (underneath the car). iirc, the b5's are in the same location. look for a cover panel with 3 nuts on it. there should be 2 large hoses going to it. remove it and see if raw fuel pours out. or, unplug the larger of the 2 hoses, and start to refill the vehicle. it should not stop. then reconnect the hose and try to refill it. this time it should stop numerous times if it is saturated or faulty. hope this helps. merry christmas

ebay charcoal canister (s4) i believe this is universal for all b5's but not a guarantee. check with your local dealership parts dept for part number.
