Driver door control module just died?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Opened the driver side door this morning and then it would intermittently lock and unlock, the window might work or not, the buttons might light up or not.

Did a scan and it said no communication with the door control module.

So did it just die? Or just a loose connector?

If it is a connector how do I access it?

you need to remove the door panel to access that control module. also check your connections at the door in the rubber gurney, maybe some wires are crunched in there.

Re: Driver door control module just died?

I did remove one side of the rubber gurney but I can't pull it far enough back to see anything.

The wires are all wrapped up with that black fabric wrap too.

When I wiggle the harness I see the light at the bottom of the door turn on and off so something is loose.

I just find it strange it all of a sudden just happened.

Re: Driver door control module just died?

your best bet then is to remove the door panel to check if any of the connectors to the control module are lose.

Can you hook me up with any diagrams for the procedure kind sir?

Any idea of 'special' tools are required? I could take it to my friends shop if this isn't a DIY.

Re: Driver door control module just died?

Have you checked the harness as it goes through the grommet in the door frame up by the hinges? The wires are very small and they may have been pinched. I know mine are for my driver front door and thus my car never knows if my door is open. Its great since I don't get the annoying chime if the key is in the ignition but annoying since the interior lights don't come on. I also get an intermittent communications code when I scan the car. Sounds similar to your issue.

    some info on my issue:

Re: Driver door control module just died?

    Thanks Doug.

I think it is the wiring harness too as when I opened the door to position #2 the door lights up and everything works.

Close the door and the lights go off and I can hear the locks engage and disengage by itself.

I was hoping it was a loose connector than broken wires as plugging in the connector would be a quick fix but it made no sense how it would have just came loose.

I guess I'll try and take the wiring bundle apart and peek inside but you know what the part number was if I needed to replace it? I'm on www.genuineaudiparts.com and am clueless as to what the harness is.

Re: Driver door control module just died?

Well I pulled away the big side of the cover on the right instead of the small side on the left I did last night and every thin wire in that harness is snapped in half and the ground is about to go

"x1rider" posted a DIY on AW, (and on other forums too?) for replacing the drivers door harness, to fix broken wires at the door jamb where the harness flexes inside the rubber boot.

Here is a pic of the stupid harness. Lucky for me I rolled the window up before it completely broke.

The brown ground wire is 70% cracked and it the next wire to go.

Re: Driver door control module just died?

bundle up the new harness with tape so they won't break again. the older B3 and B4s have the same problem with trunk wiring. B6 trunk wires get pinched with the same design as well so they will break eventually. copper can only elongate ~15% before it permanently deforms and breaks.

looks like the clip is easy to pinch off, just use flat head and press?

Re: Driver door control module just died?

The weird thing is the other half of the bundle is wrapped with the black cloth tape Audi uses to bundle up the wiring. Dunno why they didn't wrap it all up.

The big side comes off easy as you push in the clips and it pops off.

Now I don't have a driver side window for a week while the new harness comes in and I'm a bit paranoid to know when the other harnesses might finally snap in half too.

Ordered the wiring harness for $150 and it took 3 hours to take the door panel apart, snake out the old harness, snake in the new harness and put it all back together.

Found out when the door panel was off that this wasn't the first time it had been done

Unless Audi uses silver duct tape during assembly.

They do actually, on all doors:

I'll take it everything working again then?

Well don't I feel like I fool for amking that comment now.

But I do think the door panel was taken off before as a screw was missing.

glad I found this thread......I'm actually in the middle of attempting to solder the one broken wire I've got back and see how long that will last. i had hardly any room at all to work. I'm going to tape them all back up with some cloth take and see what happens. A new harness is not in the budget right now.

FYI for the next person that stumbles across this thread, there are seven door panel clips on each side that break when you pull the panel off. They're $0.90 ea at the dealer, so pick up 10 per panel (extra) before you start.

I bought a $5 trim removal tool from the auto parts store and it works great popping those clips out without damaging them.
