    ESP issue?

    Anyone have this issue:

This only happens when I am in traffic at slow speed. When crawling through traffic, at partial clutch and partial brake, kind of coasting sometimes the ESP light will come on and stay on, which turns the ESP and there is no way to turn the ESP back on without turing the car off. When this happened in the dry, I would turn the car off, turn it back on and clutch start the car while crawling in traffic, so no big deal.

This has only happened probably 3-5 times in the last 4 months since I have had the car but it just happened the other day and we have lots of snow so driving without the ESP on, although fun at times it isn't the safest with all the snow and ice out.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

    Re: ESP issue?

There has been some talk about questionable MAF (mass air flow) sensor causing the ESP light to come on.
The sensor is located on top rear in the intake snorkel.
It's the connector you need to remove when accessing the air filter.
It cost about $ 130.00 US online and is very easy to change.
Do not remove it from the housing, the new one comes installed into the round plastic housing already.

    Mechanical Catalog - 2005 - Audi - S4
    Partnumber: 077133471KX
Electrical, Powertrain control, Mass air flow sensor, Mass air flow sensor, s4, new

I changed mine being pro-active and I "think" the car feels more responsive.
I know it sounds weird but others have claimed it fixed their erratic ESP light issue.

    Re: ESP issue?

Im not sure if the A4 and the S4 problems with ESP are similar, but it might be some helpfulk information. I know on the A4 the ESP can be triggered by a faulty rear brake sensor. It can be easily tested by having 1 person hit the brakes and another watching the rear tails. If the lights stay on then after you release the brake pedal then thats your problem. Part cost about $10 from the dealer.

I see you also mentioned snow, have you been doing some drifting in the snow. With the A4 as well if you throw the car off alignment it could trigger the ESP.

    Hope this was useful.

If the ESP light is on and you can't trun it off then it's your MAF. It happened to me right after I picked up my car from service, I turned around and they told me it was the MAF.

    Re: ESP issue?

It could be the MAF, I guessed it was linked to the ABS or brake system of some sort but I guess the added heat of sitting in traffic could also be causing the sensor to mis-read.
