What the flutter dump?

So I was out driving tonight when my car started to have a little bit of compressor surge. I was pretty pissed and knew the potential consequences of hurting my turbo, so I just kept it below 3k rpm and brought it right home and parked it in the garage. It sounds kind of like this WRX:

I pulled out the stock DV and it appears to not have any tears in the diaphragm, then I took out the Forge spacer and just put back the stock DV without the spacer and I was still getting the compressor surge when lifting off the throttle. It holds the boost well, but once I get off the throttle you get that lovely sound.

I dont need to drive my car for the next few days because of the holidays, so I have time to order the right parts and get it taken care of. The spacer although sounds cool, is really useless, so I wont be putting that back on. I was thinking of just ordering the oem "g" valve from ecs tuning and see what that does, any other suggestions on what could be causing this and how to fix it?

I get that sound even on stock mode, it just depends how you let go of the gas.

The only time it doesnt make this noise is when I'm making minimal boost. Shifting gears at anything over 2500rpm or just letting off the gas and its there.

ok so since I was getting much of a response I went out and made some quick videos tonight. It sounds much louder in person, but the mic on my camera isnt the best. and yes, I know that my brake light is out, the light went on when I was pulling out of my garage tonight.

Maybe your DV has gone bad? PCV maybe?

yea, checked the DV and it looked ok but just to be sure I ordered a new "G" valve off ecstuning which should be here tomorrow. hopefully thatll fix it but we will see

You might want to get that checked out buddy, and yes the noise is compressor surge. I swapped out the DV and no change, drove it for a couple weeks and the noise didnt bother me, but when my little sis and several friends asked what was wrong with my car I looked into it more.

I didnt have any signs of PCV failure or atleast I thought, mpg was OK but not great, oil cap was easy to remove with car running, boost was in OK range, and no oil around cap. But then again I had just got the car and wasnt familar with the right mpg, I didnt get a boost gauge installed until last week, and the car only started the noise the week after I got it.

The other night I did some WOT runs down the highway and when I got home I did the regular under the hood inspection and found oil around the cap. I went in and ordered the Euroject PCV fix, now the noise is gone, boost holds ~2psi higher and for longer and the car feels a hell of a lot faster. I'm just glad that I dont have any more terradactyl's under my hood

Check the cap on the Forge DV. I got all kinds of flutter when the cap was loose!

I had the "flutter dump" a little while ago with my car- yes it's your DV that went bad, get it replaced ASAP!

No it wasnt, changed it out and it still was there, it was the pcv.

weird, it was the DV when it happened to mine... my PCV got replaced once already...

commonly a dv, pcv, or a boost/vac leak.
