    Question about staggered wheels. (newb)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I understand that staggered wheels are not for performance functionality what-so-ever and I also realize that most people are not big fans of them, especially on a car like this. That being said could you guys answer some questions for me?

When someone says they have staggered wheels does that mean they have the back set of wheels wider than the front? Or does it mean the back set is actually bigger? Like 17" in front and 18" in back? I am a little confused when someone says they have staggered wheels.

I read somewhere, maybe here, that as long as the overall rolling circumferance is the same then the AWD system would not be affected much. Is it possible to have 17's in the front and 18's in the back on these cars? Has anyone done it?

Thanks for your time, and sorry if I offended anyone by asking about this.

Re: Question about staggered wheels. (newb)

It's just referring to the width of the tire. Wider in back, narrower in front. I don't think you'd wanna run an 18" wheel in the back and 17" in the front

Re: Question about staggered wheels. (newb)

    HERE IS THE FORMULA

    (( WIDTH X RATIO X 2) / (25.4)) + RIM DIAMETER = TIRE DIAMETER

    FOR INSTANCE
    225/40R18

    ((225 x .40 x 2) / (25.4)) + 18 = 25.086" DIAMETER OF RIM AND TIRE

If you do go staggered on QUATTRO make sure the DIAMETER IS THE SAME

Make sure it is within 4%.

I ran 8.5 205/45/17 and 9.5 rear 215/45/17 for 40k miles. Tranny blew up, but not due to the wheels. I'd run them again. Just be careful with tire pressure and everything will be fine.

8's in the front and 9's in the rear, no problems whatsoever

18's running 225/40 in the front and 245/35 in the rear

Re: Question about staggered wheels. (newb)

What would you recommend for a 18x8, 18x9.5 set up on our cars? I was thinking 215/40 front and 245/35 rear... Calculations come out to: 24.77 front and 24.75 rear.

    Anyone?

any idea what to run in an 8"FR and 9"RR if im not looking to stretch too much? The S4's still on stock suspension and i want to get that taken care of before i do anything crazy stretch wise...

actually if you run a backwards staggered fitment on our cars... a wider wheel/tire combo in front than the rear itll reduce the understeer our cars are known for... pretty similar to why theyll commonly do wider fronts on supras for track cars.

Treser ran wider front tires back in the '80 on the Ur-q to battle understeer.

Re: Question about staggered wheels. (newb)

so i guess i can do 235/35-19 upfront on a 19x8 rim, and 245/35-19 in the back of a 19x10 rim... seems as the overall diameter would be 647mm vs. 655mm in the back and also the 10 inch wide rim in the back should stretch the tire out some, probably making it a little lower....

Soooo with that said the rolling difference would be 1.01% between the front and rear (655/647)

    Am I playing this safe?!?!

a6 fenders are a bit wider so you shouldnt have an issue unless you have a crazy offset.
