slight cv boot leak---sign of bad times?

So i had the driver/rear wheel out to try to look for the cause of creaking suspension noise. And I came across small amounts of grease at the end of the rubber boot(where it meets the metal).

    My questions are:

    1. the grease coming out is very minimal(did not see grease in surrounding areas). but is this a sign something is failing? all other sides do not have any grease coming out.
    2. the front boots have metal factory straps. all rear boots on my car does not have a strap at all. is this normal? should this be strap to tighten the seal?
    3. is there a way of putting in more grease without taking the entire assembly out?

    Thanks!

I will be taking out that zip tie. 

^ Not the whole assembly, just the cv joint boot. The kit costs maybe $35 compared to an axle which can run you $90-150. Besides the point that it does not need replacing if it is not broke. But you should def replace the boot. Probably a small incision that will end up a ripped boot in a matter of no time.

true. but if water muck and grime got in it could be a mess and he'll have to replace the whole assembly. hope thats not the case. But like mentioned above, you could just buy the boot which is a whole lot cheaper.

Re: slight cv boot leak---sign of bad times?

the fronts get clamps because of the added stress of being the turning wheels. i have seen tons of front boots tear but never a rear one. is it actually cracked or torn, or is it just coming out of the end of the boot. if it is cracked torn or worn, replace it, but in my opinion a minimal amount of grease seeping from the ends is not going to be a catastra-fuck. but if you see light brown muck that looks like doo-doo, replace it because that means it is contaminated with water. hope this helps. peace.

I agree, no need to replace the boot unless it is torn and the cv joint doesn't need replaced unless it is clicking. Small amounts of grease lost is no big deal but if it makes you uncomforable replace the clamp, you can get metal zip ties at Autozone that work great for it.
