    Rear half shaft rubbing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have had a weird squeeking/creaking sound from the passenger rear for a while and finally lifted the car. Nothing odd looking except some evidence of the passenger side rear half shaft rubbing against the coil spring.

Anybody see this before and any idea what might have caused this?

The car is a bone stock 06 a4q sline 2.0t with 60k on it.

BTW, this is my first post on this site. I have lurked for awhile and am astounded by the depth of knowledge and experience around here!

    Re: Rear half shaft rubbing

The halfshaft should not rub the spring, but that could possibly be from snow/ice over time? The creaking you hear, if it's all the time, is likely a bushing. The creaks are more noticeable in the winter and can be rectified with some bushing lube or a replacement of the problematic bushing. Make sure to have a trusted mechanic look at that potential spring/halfshaft contact.

    Re: Rear half shaft rubbing

Thanks! I appreciate the response. When I had the wheel off I could see paint chipped on the shaft and spring where there would make contact ( no contact when the suspension was fully extended when I had it had it jacked up ).

Can the coil spring shift or maybe the u/cv joints in the rear are worn?
