thanks for the compliment, there's a few things I need to fix now The entire day was a BLAST though, working on correcting understeer, oversteer, inducing oversteer, braking, and how the car handles with ESP on/off was sweet! I took the Bremerton ferry from my house, 10$ each way FTW

so in this video at approx 2:50 i hit a snowbank and some rut. i'm not quite sure what happened, but the cat-back disconnected from the downpipes. i ended up having to cut the exhaust hangers and throwing the cat-back in another member's truck. listen to the sound difference

That looks like a lot of fun, do you have snow tires on? It looked like to got stuck there in one of the videos I watched. You can't miss that yellow with all that white!

yup, i had dunlop wintersport M3s on (for anybody questioning if snows work). i did get stuck multiple times, but was able to get out. it was really nice testing the cars limits in a controlled environment! for what it's worth, the FWD mini with snows only got stuck once, and we were able to push it out!

That looks like a blast man! It's always great to test our cars and see what they can do in that sort of controlled environment. It's also a good test of our own skills!

What sort of speeds were you hitting on the runs?

it was a "low-speed" course, so, below 55mph. I was in 1st - 3rd most of the time

;) that thing was killin it on the course! his only complaint was that it was so light, when it hit a snowbank, it would just STOP

Would you possibly ever be bored enough to do a little write up with more detail on the driving techniques you learned for the rest of us?

I've been having a lot of fun in the snow, but don't really have anywhere wide open enough that I've found to do more than a couple donuts and some really low speed drifts.

I'd be VERY curious to hear how you were taught to introduce oversteer, and how to correct it when you want to straighten out.

it is REALLY tail happy when you get on the gas. but at the same time, I was trying to kick the tail out :) see next post on how oversteer was getting induced

let me see if i can find the notes from the event, but here is the jist of it

prep and clean your car for the winter. don't run all seaons or winter tires at a lower PSI. it is a myth that you should deflate the tires for more traction, esp on these cars.

when you are cleaning snow off your car, remove it from the roof as well (you'll see people who brake, and the snow from the roof will obscure their vision).

quattro and abs dont work when your wheels are locked up...you can only affect change if you're moving.

understeer usually happens when you go in to a corner too hot and the front tires dont have traction. when the car is not going where you are steering towards, you are understeering. steering more will not help. you want to straighten out your wheels, apply throttle, once you hook up, steer the direction you want to go.

oversteer happens when the rear tires lose traction. to induce oversteer on our cars, get some speed, turn the wheel 45 degrees, as you do this, lift off the throttle. the momentum that the rear has, and the throttle lift should be enough to kick the rear out. immediately apply throttle to bring it back in. by modulating the throttle you can "steer with the rear". with the stasis diff, i could apply most of the power to the rear, and it would just kick out hard :D

this may be incorrect, or partially incorrect, feel free to correct me

"steer with the rear" part is right on. That's what I found to be the best way to control the car while sliding. Throttle to slide and let off to straighten out. Steering wheel in the same position.

Thanks a lot for the post! I think the biggest problem is I don't have anywhere safe to go where I can get enough speed for the throttle lift to be enough to slide the rear. I'll have to find somewhere and try that. All I've been able to do is just steer and hammer the throttle at low speeds to induce the slide, but it's anything but smooth.
