Takin' a Trip to Big Bear

    Hey everyone,

My friends decide I should drive up to Big Bear. I just wanted to know if you guys ever driven up there and what I need to expect. There is definitely gonna be snow on the road and I was wondering if my Kumho SPTs and Quattro will the job. I really do not want to put chains on my car. Any advice would be nice. Thanks in advance.

    - Danny

my friend has relatives that live in BB and they say that right now is the most snowfall they've seen in years up there, chains required all the time--even for 4wd. invest in some chains, you cant go wrong. if you end up getting stuck and need em they're there for you. would you rather pay to get your car fixed once it gets fked up from spinning out, or buy some chains and have them with you forever?

I've been going up to Big Bear for the last 10 years and only once were the roads snowed in.

Re: Takin' a Trip to Big Bear

I went up Friday night at like 10pm. Not too far up the 330 they had a road block and were requiring chains. My buddy has a V10 huge truck with 4wd and monster tires so he actually ran the entire way up in 2WD and never lost traction. My other friend has a Tacoma 4WD V6 and with no chains was sliding A lot has to do with tires.

Heading home Saturday afternoon chains were still required right at Snow Valley with CHP standing there. Traffic coming UP was horrendous and went all the way down the mountain.

i dont know about now, but i just talked to my machinist and he lives in running springs and he said even 4wd required chains. I'm not sure about now.
He said it was the first time in idk how many years that they called it a Stage 3 storm or category 3 or something rather.
