What do you guys think?

so i had my 90k mile service done and Penske Audi says that my timing belt needs to be replaced. the previous owner had ALL service records and according to them, the TB/water pump was replaced at 70k (at some dealer on the west side. I have to call the previous owner to see where he had all the maintenance done, the records don't say the name of the dealer.)

I trust Penske Audi so I'm assuming that the other dealer never did the actual job but charged for it because a timing belt should last for more than 20k miles right? Do you guys think I'll have any luck if I bring my car and records to the other dealer and tell them someone messed up and never did the TB job and have them do it for free?

I have to ask, what kind of service records, don't have the place of service?

Well, it sounds like he hasn't had anything done yet, but in these days of factory repair manual mechanics, I'm sure the tech just looked at his mileage and assumed it hadn't been changed. I'd rather see some pics of the belt though.

It looks like the dealership uses a really old service record keeping. It is about 30 pages of all the service done from the car from 8 miles (when the prev. owner picked up the car) to ~72k when i bought the car from him. It just doesn't say the dealer name. Im going to give him a call and ask him.

And I'll try and post pics tomorrow of the TB

take the bumper off

Just pop off the top cover, you can see the back of the belt very good. Alot of times things will be recommended by mileage without inspection.

looks like you have some time left, is the belt nice and tight? One of the main things your checking for is little cracks on the surface (smooth side) of the belt
