replacing mufflers instead of new catback?

Is it possible to just replace the stock mufflers with universal ones? Can you just cut out the stock mufflers, put in new ones, and use the same piping from the cats to the mufflers? I asked a shop and the mechanic said you can't just replace the muffler cause it won't fit and said that I need to buy a cat back. Is this mechanic just dumb or is it possible to just put in new mufflers instead of a whole catback? Catback is out of the question for me... Too expensive! I just want a nice sound is there no option other than a 1000$+ catback? Thanks

I've seen/heard a B6 S4 with the stock mufflers removed and straight pipes running off the resonators. It sounded pretty damn good, too. No idea what the cabin drone was like though I have to think it was pretty loud.

I am running Labree catback without resonators and the sound is intoxicating. Makes Chargers and Mustangs pee themselves. Makes cops go HUH? until they see its a wagon and they go ehhh and back to their business. Booyeah.

Slight drone at 75 in 6th. Otherwise purrrfect. Cruise, idle, WOT, decel, unreal. Better than anything on XM.

So if you want to unleash your S4's inner beast, nonres gets my absolute

Not bad at all, I love it! ! ! I did the muffler bypass with Y-Pips, I posted up a little info somewhere else, and you can find plenty online. But they sound ridiculously good!
