Should I buy this S4

Hey guys,
I have been looking to trade my 01 a4 for an S4. I found one that seems to be reasonable, but need ur opinions. Its an 01.5 s4. Nogaro blue with 89k on the clock. It is a 6sp with the cold weather package and as far as I know the only mods are a short shifter and an exhaust. The dealer had it listed for 14,900. I felt this was a little high. I have only been able to talk him down to 14,000. He is paying off my a4 which is a plus. EPC light is on, which he will be looking into.

I drove it today, and it feels strong. No turbo whine or major noises that concerned me. Handles well and overal feels good. The exterior is in very good shape with the exception of the wheels which have a significant amount of curb rash. I am trying to find out if the timing belt service has been done. He wasnt sure but is asking his mechanic if it looked like it had been replaced.


Is 14k a reasonable price? And is there anything else I should be concerned about. The car is about 1.5 hrs away, so I will have limited oportunities to examine it.

14k seems a little steep to me. I have seen quite a few lower mileage cars going in the 10K-12k range

yeah that seems a little high... i bought mine for 12,5xx in september and it had 80k miles. id say if you could get him down to like 13 then it wouldnt be to bad of a deal

Yeah I was thinkin a little high myself. When I told him that kbb.com and NADA both list the value at 12.9k, he said that they dont take into consideration the color is in high demand and the fact that its a 6sp.

Oh... another thing that was pretty funny (not that its really important). He said on the phone that he's had it only 4 days. Today in person he said no more than 6 or 7 days. And when I was talking to the mechanic about the EPC light, he said " I cleared that code a month ago, I'll look at it again". A month ago????? LOL !

They are not an audi dealership. 90 percent of the cars they sell are audi's though. And he said he has all the software that the dealers have. I did see mechanics working on audi's.

What dealership is this? You can PM me if you don't want someone to snipe it I don't think the dealer is going to move too far off that price though. But get it fully scanned and see what's truely up, then maybe you have a little wiggle room.

He was asking 14,000 but I told him i need to do timing belt etc and thats about 1500 right there so he agreed that 12,500 is fair.

Agreed. The car market being what it is $11,000 is more than fair for it. They (used car dealers) are hurting for sales much more than you need to step to pay that kind of money. If they don't take it you should keep looking. You can find a better deal. For $14,000 you should be able to buy at least a stage II car.

For an enthusiast, yeah it does. At a non audi dealership, not so much. I really don't see them taking that much less than the asking price. I've worked at a dealership before and even when sales were slow, they knew they would find someone who would buy at or near the asking price.

This sounds like a used car lot that doesnt sell any used cars, but just sells used cars they buy off auctions or trade ins. That is just a guess.

They are still a car lot. They know how to smell a sale. As everyone says, it is a high demand color for enthusiasts, which they said themselves so they know if they get the right person they will buy it.

So when you talk to them dont let your actions or body language feed to that. You need to be willing to show that you'll walk away.

They already lied about how long they've had it, so they've had it for a while, be patient and if they wont go down, wait I'm sure they will. But there is the gamble of someone else coming along. But at same time you need to remember there are other S4's out there too.

If they will refuse to go down in price. Then you can remind them that if they want to ask top dollar price, you want top dollar service. Make sure they fix everything:
1. replace timing belt on their dime
2. fix esp light- clearing code means nothing, it will come back. make sure they actually fix the problem.
3. take your laptop and scan for codes yourself so you can see what they are. They will probably lie to you and not say everything that is wrong. or take it for a drive, come back and ask mechanic to show you the codes and watch as he scans car.
4. check over suspension check all options to make sure everything works.

To me if it has a short shifter and exhaust, I would bet money it has a chip (well at least had one unless they took it out before selling it.)

Does it have a boost gauge? If not have them long requested boost vs actual boost to see if its chipped or not, and to see if any boost leaks.
If its around 1700 mbars then its stock. If its arond 2200 mbars it is chipped.

I hate dealers there is no honest one, will lie through their teeth to make a sale.

sounds a tad steep. i recently picked up a nogaro for a few grand less with 68k miles, granted it was from a private party. good luck with the purchase if you decide to go through with it

try to get them to suup it up a little bit before you buy it. obviously you arnt going to get them to install any Nitrous boosters, but maybe they could throw in one of those big spoilers, then test drive it with the new spoiler and see how it improves its performance. then once theyve done the work on the spoiler you can try to get them to install some underbody neon lighting. u would definitely look like a playa rollin up to da club like that. it would then definitely be worth the investment 14,000 just in the amount of hunnies that it would attract to your ride.

^^^Agreed, I've been looking for a B5 S4 for about six months now. I personally wouldn't pay that price unless its had the timing belt service done, and has had a new clutch installed. I have noticed that the 6spd's go for a bit more money than the tips, in some cases a fair amount more...

That's assuming a lot, like the car is chipped for one. But yeah it could be a lot of things. Best thing to do is have it scanned if the O.P. is really interested in buying it. I know it's over an hour away, but if you really want it, that shouldn't be an issue.
