Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
OK I'm 16 and have had my license for 1 whole month. And I'm sick of using mommy's and daddy's cars so i've been on the hunt...

Today I came across a 2002 audi a4 3.0 quattro with an auto (wish it had a stick but o well)

any hoo its got leather and all the goodies on it with 79k on the clock and if I buy it it will depleate my funds allmost intirelly, minus gas. So is it worth it to buy it as far as metance go's cuz i won't have the money for $2500 repairs that requare a mecanic for every little thing (im good with my hands so i can do most stuff myself)

really I want to now if relability is good on it or not thanks
    Zach

P.S. this car is clean as far as looks
need answers asap also the price is 8800 is that a good price or not thanks
also does anyone know of the most reputable dealer in maryland?

i was exactly in your shoes except i was seventeen when i bought my A4. i used up pretty much all my money on it and i don't regret my decision at all. although i would recommend looking around more for the exact one you want (ie stick-shift). i got mine with 45000 miles though so that's a fair bit less than the one you're looking at.

if you're looking at an A4 with that many miles i'd say check if the timing belt's been done and if regular maintenance and oil changes have been done

wait a few months and save up some more money and get something with lower miles and 1.8 if you want to do some engine mods

i know how you feel i waited about a year after i got my license so i could get a b6

I'm still 16 and have had my license for 6 months and the A4 for 3 of those. I would wait for something with lower miles, and find out if the timing belt has been done on that car. I would look for low 60k range 1.8T in manual, they should run you about 10k or so. Keep saving up, it's a buyers market.

for the price you cant really beat it. Do you have any pics or a link? If you cant afford to do any mods, then the 3.0 is the way to go. It has sufficient power which you will be happy with and it sounds good too, you can even do something as small as adding an intake and it will sound even better. I don't think you will be able to find another B6 for that price, as far one thats clean and you like so i say jump on it.

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

i wouldnt spend all of your money on a car that will require maintenance for sure...especially a timing belt job if youre getting into a car with 70-80k miles.
Also before you buy a car get insurance quotes if you have to pay for that too, you may be suprised how expensive it is when the car is registered to your own name

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

I'm getting an insurance quote done right now acctually and I really can't save up to much more monet due to sports. I am also trying to find out if it has had the timming belt changed or not. Also I think i might be able to get the dealer down to 7400 becasue they aren't moving any cars so that would leave me money to do the timming belt if it is yet to be done. I may be able to post some pics today when I go to test drive it. Lastley I'm not to worried about modding it maybe and exhust and intake but thats it. The car only needs to last me through high school then I plan to upgrade to somthing newer and sportier when insurance has dropped a little.

Thanks for the help so far and keep it coming,

im 16 too and i have an A4.
as absolutegtr said get a manual.
    and get a 1.8T
    lol
Plus if your into modding the 1.8T will be alot easier.
you can get a 1.8T to out perform a 3.0 easily

If that's the case you should probably get a beater p.o.s like every other high school kid, that way if you try something dumb with your car (which we all have done) you won't be as screwed. Just something to think about

trust us we have all been that age in the same shoes as you. Wait till you find that exact color and model you want. just some advise: Get a 1.8t if you have ANY plans to mod it cause thats you only choice, and there are many of options, some cheaper than others. Definitely wait til you get the one you want, ie stick, cause you wont be happy with out it. Once you do find one you like check into the maintenance already done, that way you really wont need a repair fund.

As for the 1.8 over 3.0: with the 1.8 you will have better MPG, lower insurance, and more environmentally friendly vehilce, better modding options, and in generally a better car lol

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

If your budget is less then 9k, I wouldn't advise touching any newer Audi's in general. The maintenance on these car are not exactly cheap, even if you are a DIY'er. I'm not trying to discourage you, but buying a car that is out of your league will only end in your demise. And in order to get a properly running B6 A4, with any engine will require routine servicing. I.E timing belt, wheel bearings, brakes, rotors. Hell if you don't change your oil yourself, it could probably cost you about $45 dollars each time, not exactly a car you should take to Jiffy Lube. There are Audi approved engine oils, or even coolant where you can't just throw a bottle of Prestone in it. My suggestion is do your research, and make sure you have enough budget. Don't mean to be brutally honest.

OK so I just got back from the test drive and I loved it I used the autoclutch and i enjoyed so I'm happy with that. Also I talked to my parents and my dad was all for it and mom doesn't care to much about any care. And according to dad he'll make sure that I can afford it becasue he liked it enough. So I think I will be purchasing it I'll be sure to post pics if I do

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

if you want a manual now, you'll regret not getting one later. Wait for a manual 1.8t quattro. It will be totally worth it. If you jump the gun and settle for the 3.0 auto, if that's not what you really want, you'll always wish you did it differently.

I started looking when i was 17, a couple months before my 18th birthday, and i just got my car in september and i'm now 19. I started out on here in about July talking to people and reading up on everything about the cars, learning what problems they have, seeing what mods are possilble, reading DIY's, all that stuff.

I had very strict guidelines at first. I started out only looking for white, manual 1.8t quattro's with black interior. But white with black interior and manual is a very hard combo to come across. So i ended up finding a really good deal on a silver one that fit all my other guidelines. It takes patience. As much as you may want it right now, it'll be worth it in the long run to wait.

And since you're new, it would be very beneficial for you to stay on here and learn while you look. Because there is a lot to know about these cars and it will really help when you find them if you know what to look for. Also, i'm gonna throw this out there now. If you don't want to get yelled at, or "flamed", utilize the search feature. 99% of the time, the topic you're looking for has already been covered, and they don't delete threads around here. Just a heads up so you don't think people on here are ass holes who always yell at you lol.

EDIT: And also i forgot to mention, as far as is the B6 right for you... i'd say yes. They are great cars, and i absolutely love mine. I couldn't be happier with it actually. I am in love with my car and i don't regret getting the B6 A4 at all. It may have some small problems that need to be fixed, but in the end it's a fantastic car.

An Audi is a terrible car for a 16 year old. They are expensive to repair and maintain on a minimum wage high school job. You do not want to have mommy and daddy paying your repair bills and insurance, you won't learn responsibility that way.

Well im 18 and I drive an 04 A4 3.0 and I love it... Ya I wish at times I had the 1.8t (for modding) but I did what I could to mine, and I love it. I wish I would have gotten mine for 8k.. lol I paid something on the lines of 24k for mine (granted its 2 yrs newer hand has everything with only 55k) Your lucky, yours has quattro! Mine is a FrontTrak and the 3.0 has sooo much stock torque that sometimes traction control has to help me out lol.. Id say go for it!

Plus if your just going to be driving it from school to your place and to your friends house its great! ALSO I dont know how the police situation is in your area, but I live in SoCal right by the beach and here the police are real sticklers. If your out late they'll always come up with some BS to pull you over and check you and your car out for suspicion. With my Audi, its so clean looking and "nice" that I have never been pulled over in it *knok on wood*.. With my '94 Explorer, I was pulled over soo many times for crap that this is really a nice difference. Plus the ladies love Audi! I get so many honeys complimenting me on it. The only thing you'll need to worry about is the milage your going to rack up b/c everyone will want to ride with you :) hehe

I agree.. If you dont have a job, an Audi isnt the way to go... My funds were completely drained (mainly b/c I bought this car) but also because repairs that are out of your league will add up. An average oil change will run you about $40-50 if you do it yourself. (That includes 6qts Mobil 1 5-30, and OEM filter) For example, I couldn't do the bracket replacement for my front suspension and my mechanic ended up charging me $500 bucks for the job... The damn things only cost like $10 a piece but the labor is so intensive its a bear.

Mike02A4, yes a minimum wage job CAN maintain a car like this up! Before I got my job at EVS and I worked making 8/hr I was able to keep her running.

But in all honesty your going to love this car! All your going to want to do is (drive)

I disagree, I soooo badly wanted a manual.. (nothing beats it) but it was hard to find a nice looking, well kept manual for my price range.. But since I drive the freeway to work, have alot of hills in my area, and what not the auto was just fine.. When I need/want the beauty of a stick, I just push the shifter to the right and viola! its a manual!
Think of it this way, if you need to answer a call, change the song on the iPod, or something your right hand will be glued to the shifter. OH! and if your in traffic, have fun cuz its a pain to drive a stick in bumper to bumper.

    ---
my ideal b6 was a red, silver, or dolphin grey Ultra Sport with a 6spd tranny and a 1.8t.
I ended up with a 04 3.0L S-Line, in DG with all the options and packages except Navi, AWD, and Cold pkg, and I love it!!!

One minute it can be a 6spd auto, the next a 6spd manual!! OMG

A CVT even when in 'shift' mode still isn't a 6-spd manual. No matter how hard you want to believe it, it just isn't.

I just want to say one thing on the responsobility note.

I care for all of my stuff and I started working when I was 13 so I could get a nice car so its not like I'm not working for it. Also I do have a regular job and another side job so I got about 250 comming to me every 2 weeks which aint to bad for being in high school.

There's nothing wrong with a Tip... nice transmission and with the 3.0 plenty of torque and driveability. Dude though... hopefully you AREN'T planning to be an English major in college. Two words. Spell check!!!

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

haha, to be honest, i would be a little skeptical about that price..it seems a bit low, and there could be something wrong...i would take the car to a mechanic, you wont regret doing it..when i first bought my car (im also 16, got mine a couple months ago) it turns out that my transmission was fucked..guess what? 2 grand just a few weeks after buying the car...go to a mechanic, give him a 100 or 200 dollars to check the car out, and know that what your buying is good...thank god my parents are doing financially ok, because i would not be driving right now if they werent..i make 300 every 2 weeks, and trust me, i would hate to work 3 months just for transmission that could have been avoided for 100...also, if you want a manual get a manual...and to be quite honest, your 16, get the 3.0 and be happy with it...chances are your gonna wana put rims on it, and do mods that make the car look good...the 3.0 provides a good amount of power without modding it...with the 1.8, your gonna be spending money to make it faster...a 16 year old doesnt need a car with much more than 230 horsepower to be honest..thats just asking for trouble..i was mad too when people were like oh you shoulda gotten a 1.8 to mod...and then i was like no, cause ill just get in trouble with more power..anyways, make the right decision before you buy..i know that when you sit in that drivers seat your like omg this is the nicest car ever, just like i was, but be very patient and careful when buying a used car..the dealer WILL screw you where they can...please just take your time and make the right decision

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

Andreas is right... Mine did something similar, like a month after I had it the tranny went into limp mode (tranny computer died) so after spending like 24k for my car I had to shell out (borrowed money from folks, but paid them back) 2,400$ for the fix. Also in July (on my birthday funny enough) the window motor died (it had been acting up for about a month, but I didnt want to fix it til it died) and that sucker cost me $600! If I were you, buy this audi, and goto an Audi dealer, for $300 they rape your car and give you a report with like a 734589437 point inspection and they're very good at noticing whats wrong. THEN get the Audi warranty (yes, you can still get it, even though your standard warranty is over, it just costs like 1k more) that way if ANYTHING happens you simply drive, or towed to the Audi dealer and they fix AND give you a rental lol

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

can't touch the porsche cuz of what it is
can't touch the f-150 cuz its my dad's work truck
can't touch the pathfinder cuz its my mom's daily driver
have to ask to take the f-350 every time, can't take it to school, can't take it out at night only to work and thats it

basically i only drive when i'm going to work other then that i have to hitch a ride from my parents (lame) or someone else (takes forever)

really I just want the freedom

Re: is a B6 right for me? new driver

the same thing happened to me. Have a mechanic check it out. A month after I bought my car the Torque converter went on it, which would have been a 2k fix, but it was covered by the warranty. Also it needed a 1k brake job, but I convinced the dealer to do that too because I bought the car with a warped front rotor.
