I fought the pole and the pole won.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well today coming home from school I had a little fight with a pole. I was coming around a tight turn a little too fast and my wheels started to slip, I tried to brake but it was complete ice and I had no traction whatsoever. My back left bumper hit the pole and well, the rest is history.

So anyways, anybody have any ideas what exactly will need to be fixed and what will it cost?

Thanks for the help and hope you guys had a lot better of a day than I did.

its too bad you hit the panel on the left side, otherwise it would have been easy... just a new bumper and 2x tail lights (one for the bumper the other the main tail light) But now thats gonna cost since you took out the metal panel... Good luck... Keep us posted

Re: I fought the pole and the pole won.

I'd say around $2,000 all said and done? If I was you, I'd just claim insurance and go to the best shop you can find.

If you have no insurance you can do the tail light yourself, remove the junk bumper (that is not repairable), and install the new bumper yourself... But that still $1,000+ of paint/body work.
    Ignorance is bliss.

You definitely want to put a claim in with the insurance company. That's going to be $2-3k easy worth of damage, so paying out of pocket prob just doesn't make sense.

Also, wheel into skid and gas...not brakes when skidding...hindsight's always 20/20 though.

    Sorry buddy.

That's not too bad, at least it could have been much worse. With any dent in the sheet metal that deep, they actually need to hit it with the torch to shrink the metal since it stretched. I agree w/the $2-3 grand estimates.

I just had my car "hit and run" in the summer and same type of damage.

I see your in Calgary too, Pm me for the bodshop info. My car literally looks better than new because there was no bondo used and whole new rear quarter.

Re: I fought the pole and the pole won.

Sounds like you didn't get rid of the drift bug before leaving the parking lot in your vid from earlier....

We all do bone-headed things to our cars now and again though; I am no better. My car currently has some scrape and crumple damage to the passenger side rear wheel well and quarter panel from clipping a support column in my office's parking garage will hastily pulling into a spot. What I thought would be a quick paint job and "punch out the dents" job has turned out to be a $4,000+ repair. I now have a choice of claiming it and seeing an increase to a $3000 annual premium, or paying out of pocket.....

That having been said, a x2 to the insurance claim idea; it will most likely be cheaper in the long-run, but either way you play it, it sucks. Sorry for the accident though man!

Re: I fought the pole and the pole won.

    Thanks for the help guys.

In hindsight I probably would've faired a lot better if I had stayed on the gas but unfortunately my initial reaction was to give it to the brakes.

But you live and you learn I guess, It's just to bad that this lesson is going to end up costing a couple grand.

Definitely bring it to a qualified body shop first to get an estimate. These things have a way of rapidly adding up in cost. At least this way, you can calculate whether it's better to go through insurance or to eat the costs out of pocket.

I had a similar incident with our Q7 earlier this year. Initial estimates from the body shop ran about $3500. The insurance adjuster thought it was about $2000. Final bill from the body shop? $7700. My total OOP cost was just my deductible ($500), though I know that my insurance hikes will cost me another ~$2500 over the next 5 years.

I think I'm going to go with the DTM if I can find it somewhere. It seems the cost difference between the DTM and the regular s-line it pretty insignificant so I might as well upgrade.

its better to make a simple mistake now than a large mistake later. not saying this is always the case but you got off quite easily seeing as everyone is ok and the car is fixable. btw nice car at 17, i had to wait until i was 18 for my 06 b7.

Re: I fought the pole and the pole won.

When people give their estimates from similar scenarios, you also have to ask if they paid through insurance or not. When shops know it's getting claimed, their rates go way up. If you pay out of pocket, they give you a break.

I still stand by my $2,000-3,000 tops range if you pay out of pocket and get a deal, but if you do claim insurance then don't be surprised if the total comes to $5,000+. But a claim is a claim, who cares what it adds up to for you.

I did something similar too once, and made a $5k-ish claim when I was about 19 I think. Insurance dropped me and signed me up under their more expensive branch, and yeah my premium went up a few hundred... but overall I saved myself money by not forking over $5-6k myself in one shot.

Yea I don't think I could claim this as a hit and run, my dad's a lawyer and he would never condone insurance fraud especially because he would be involved. He won't even let me download music illegally.

the lines are different....i you do the rear without the front, it won't flow, and look out of place. you can get away with a dtm front only...but dtm rear only....that will just look stupid.

Re: I fought the pole and the pole won.

note that you shouldn't hit the brakes while sliding in quattro, but on ice even hitting the gas won't always work. i'm an experienced quattro guy and my run-in with a pole at like 3mph last weekend couldn't be avoided. i hit the gas as much as i could and there was no going forward. your best bet if you're going to hit a curb is to take it head on so you don't crack an axle or rim going sideways. in this case if you went straight at the curb i wouldn't even think about hitting the gas, you'll just hit it harder...
