How much do you tighten rear wheel bearing

I know you need to have the wheel bearing bolt tight. But what is the torque setting for the torque wrench?

Can you torque it down too much?

Are you talking about the axle bolt?

Look in your cars manual. The torque specs are there.

Re: How much do you tighten rear wheel bearing

yes I meant the axle bolt. Sorry I should of specified that.

I'll look in the owners manual for the spec's

But I mainly was wondering if you can overtighten the bolt. I dont have a torque wrench and just wrenched on it until it felt tight.

I should invest in a torque wrench though, it will come in handy

Re: How much do you tighten rear wheel bearing

You will not over-tighten it. The bolt's thread actually stretch to get the proper seating.

"Until it feels tight" is nowhere near enough. My 350lb roommate and I had to lean on it with a 3ft cheater bar to reach the required torque - which is 140 ft/lbs + 180 degrees (half turn).

PS... It won't be in the owner's manual. It would be found in the Bentley repair manual, but if you had that you probably wouldn't be asking

Re: How much do you tighten rear wheel bearing

Confirming what Tokin said, it is a lot of force to tighten the axle bolt. I had a 3/4 ratchet with the bar of the jack on it and I was hanging on it. Im like 215. So 215*4 feet is quite a bit of force. A torque wrench isnt necessary for this, but is nice for stuff like pullies and the TB job.

Basically tighten it as much as you can... then go a little more.

Always a comedian in the crowd

I'll go work out tomorrow morning and take a few steroids, then with the 4 foot pipe I have ( I call it the motivator) I'll crank on that bolt so its good and tight. Then just to be sure, I'll check it with my fingers.

no wonder everyone has so much "trouble" working on these cars, they certainly aren't the easiest cars to work on, but not having the right tools is more the problems i see on here more than anything.

I agree, just wrenching on it isn't going to get you to spec. You should really get a torque wrench..
