Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I cannot find a list of what makes an A4 a stage 1, 2 or 5395...where can I find the details?

I am purchasing a 2001.5 1.8T with GT28 turbo, intercooler, racing clutch, etc...and am wondering what category (if any) I will fit into.

    thanks guys

Oh and unless you're getting that car for really cheap you probably shoudn't buy it. All of that stuff = pushed the car really hard which can cause a ton of problems down the road. It probably already has the dash lighting up like a chirstmas tree.

From what I understand, the Gt28 is much bigger, correct?

I had my finances all setup to buy it, THEN he says he forgot to tell me that it has this turbo setup...so I dont know much about these setups yet! haha

Re: What is "Stage 1, Stage 2..." etc?

First off, welcome to Audizine. You should make yourself aquainted with that FAQ sheet on the top of the page and come to know that the search button is your freind. It can save you from being flamed (though I do not flame people personally )The GT28r is a rather nice turbo for the B5 A4. Problem is, it is only oil cooled, as opposed to oil and water cooled. Still a very nice turbo none the less. It is rated at 310chp (as you are an 01, you have 170chp), so it should give you ~230whp or so w/good tune. A race file should grant a couple more ponies. If you ask the seller if it is an APR kit, they are very reliable and there are a couple people on this forum board whom has it. But peiced together by a sovereign individual is no issue as long as he used reliable non-cheap parts. BT is an acronym for Big Turbo. BAT is Big *** Turbo. BAMFT......well, you get the idea.

People generally don't like stages for our vehicles. It is more of "What mods you got?" type thing as opposed to "What stage are you?".

hahahaha.... Oh we appreciate the mods.... we pay twice as much since we have two turbos. To follow up on the actual thread; any used car should be purchased with caution. A "too good too be true" price usually means there is something wrong with it. Attention to cooling and maintence are huge with any big turbo modded cars. Good luck with the purchase and welcome to the best driving experience you'll ever have!

you are acquiring someones project, you best know how to finish (maintain might be a better word) that project before you buy into it. have the rods been done? how many miles on the turbo? how well was the car maintained? what kind of oil used? timing belt? what software is it running?

you also have to take into account the fact that someone who has done these mods is not going to drive it very conservatively. atleast i certainly wouldnt.

Re: What is "Stage 1, Stage 2..." etc?

I picked up my 98 a4 with a t28 with 137k miles right before thanksgiving for $2,500...it needed some body work, new brakes and rotors...and a terminal rest...so far i have $3,300 TOTAL spent on this project...runs amaziningly...fast as shit...very fun...well worth the $3,300 i spent. Car came with t28 turbo, test pipe, apr exhaust, stage 3 clutch and some other little things...turbo and exhaust only been on the car for under 20k miles...plans for the month of january: fueling & ecu, forge 004, n75 race valve, facelift headlights and fmic.

Ive had nothing but good luck with this car so far...which is a change for me...but i bought the car as a project car and i knew what i was getting myself into and i love this car more then any other car i have owned or even ridden in. Im extremely happy with my purchase.

Just wanted to share my little recent story :)

I just hope your getting just as good of a deal. Good Luck Bro!

Ghost, thanks for trying to knock sense into me. I did not state that I am not some 16 oblivious kid. I've been in your shoes many times before; except with sportbikes, etc.

8000 miles on turbo, tuned by unitronics, synthetic oils always used. Timing belt, water pump, tie rods all done 15k ago. Seems to be a good buy

I am not sure honestly. But I heard the whole story on how he drove to quebec because he wanted a certain unitronics techie to perform the tune, haha.

Those are a lot of assumptions.

UNI has 2 techs, LEVI and Stephan. Mike Z and Mike S are owners. Mike Z is the tuning brains and the one who writes the files. Having a 2001.5 and having spent many hours on the rollers at Uni tuning the car all I will say is I am more than happy, satisfied and always get support if needed.

If the owner of the car you're looking at owns a shop, than I would go over the car and take it for a test drive. Look at al records, service, receipts and get an idea of what you're getting into. How quickly can you pick up a new platform and feel confident fixing it when need be? The 01's are not to bad at all. Those babbling on about Journal Bearing setups are a bit oldschool and worried for naught, as long as you cool down properly nothing changes.

Also keep in mind the quoted "stages" that were posted in here about 3 times are for the B5 S4, not the B5 A4 1.8T. Last time I checked we didn't run piggies or PJ K04's. We have 1 DP and 1 turbo. The other one lists k04's as STG3 which is way off. STG3 was derived from APR's kit comprised of a GT25, which is now the Gt28. They now offer a STG3+ for DBW cars, anything that is a GT30and above is looked at as a BAT. All Gt28-30 as BT, anything over a 3076 is pretty much looked at as a BAMFT. At this point it's a blur as so many BT's are now in the BAT club etc.... Basically any car GT30 or higher is in STG4 territory and from there the sky is the limit:) To much whinning over stages it seems. I am stage shite eating grin myself:)

Bassed thanks for the write up!

270 awhp on street fuel and street tune is enough for me at the moment! We'll see about a year from now! :)
