hey guys so its time for me to do my timing belt. Currently i have 85k on the clock but i might need to hold off until summer becuase of the price. So far i was quoted by my mechanic for the timing belt, water pump, and a new tensior assembley, would be $1200. does that sound about right?

Had mine done for about 700 by a reputable Audi shop, parts included. Shop around.

That seems about right for this area. If you're going to wait until summer anyway, why not read up on the procedure and see if it's something you feel comfortable doing yourself? Or maybe someone in your regional forum can lend a hand. You can do a lot more fun stuff with 1200 bucks than giving it to a shop.

DIY, its not difficult, just replacing parts that are right in front of you. Hardest part is the tare down of the front end.

    Re: Timing Belt!!!

This can be a DIY for anybody. I would recommend asking if any body around you is going to be doing it soon, so you can join them, watch and learn so you have an idea of what needs to be done. Also read the instructions a few times before you start it.

I told you in PM you should go with Greg @ SSP for a good price, and especially a guy like him who knows these cars like none other. Let me know if you want his number...

Second that it cost me $350 in parts and a weekend, good bonding with friends over a few brews after hard day of working on the car, plus alot better than spending $1200 for a dealer to do it

Blau has better deals than ECS on the TB kits. They come with coolant too.

x2, the ultimated plus kit includes it all.. I have also used Blau parts, they have a nice kit too, and great customer service. I think if you are on the east coast, go with ECS, if you are on the west coast, use blau... 5 days for ground shipping is annoying
