A6 Newbie looking for maintenance guides

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just picked up an '05 A6 4.2L. Are there any good resources out there for getting familiar w/ this engine? Mostly interested in getting info on general maintenance procedures. I have always done just about all the jobs for my previous cars, but this one looks like a different beast all together. Hopefully, I am just intimidated! Any other help appreciated. Thanks.

Oh boy, are you in for trouble. 4.2? Oh where to start. Not like the reliable and quick 2.7t where you add a chip and zoom. Surprised you got it home without mishap. No leaks yet? Did it shift ok?

Actually, just kidding - you'll soon see there are 2 camps here, based on engine, and we're mostly pre-C6 crowd, but you'll get straight answers. No CPO?

How many miles? Welcome! Post pix!

I have had my 05 4.2 for nearly 4 years now. It is a great driving car. The manual is available on the internet through Bentley. Welcome to the club.

Its got 72k. I was actually looking to get the 3.2, but found a deal on the 4.2...hopefully won't be paying for it in the end.

    What is CPO?

Re: A6 Newbie looking for maintenance guides

Outside of $100 oil changes (filter is around $30, and 9.5 quarts of Mobil 1), it is a rock solid motor. Enjoy, and outside of a supercharger, won't have the engine MOD bitting at your wallet. With gas back down, a no brainer.

I was told the '05 has the timing chain...is this not correct?

Re: A6 Newbie looking for maintenance guides

How difficult is an oil change on the 4.2? Strange looking filter and it takes a ton of oil (9.3 qts). I would rather do it myself if its not a major pain. Any walkthroughs out there?

Re: A6 Newbie looking for maintenance guides

I have the 05 3.2 Quattro, and just love it. I have more then enough power to keep me entertained, and the gas mileage to take longer trips. Just did a 7 hour run from Las Vegas, through Death Valley, and back to Vegas...did it on 3/4 of a tank. And was doing quite a bit of spirited driving with the guys from my car club. But congrats on your purchase. Don't let it intimidate you, it's just nuts and bolts, and wires like any other car. Lefty loosey, righty tighty still applies to the A6 as it does to the rest of the cars.
