Don't worry too much. Mine did the same thing a couple times last winter, as soon as the car warmed it went away. I thought it was the fuel pump going out or something but it wasn't.

Only in the morning or consistently throughout the day? If consistently then probably your fuel filter. My car makes all kinds of noises when its cold out ranging from alternator belt to a whistling sound I cant pinpoint.

If it's a short noise (2-3 seconds) then it's just a pump priming.

@jdmnomore: whistling sound is probably your secondary air pump. Mine does it around 2500 RPM for a few first shifts.

Check your power steering fluid. I had a similar issue, and it was the power steering pump making noise because of a low fluid level.

My car had the same noise as described. Changed the fuel filter, and it went away. Had to get it at the dealer as I guess there are a few styles, and they can get you the right one based on your vin. Not cheap, well as far as fuel filters go. Was about 70 bux for mine. Pretty easy to replace once you figure out the clips (they push in, not pry out) on the fuel lines. Its located under a piece of plastic under the pass. side door.

Cold does it. Every VAG car I've owned in the past has done it in the cold temperatures.
