VAG cable? Where did you get yours, and how does it work?

So I found one for $35, and want to purchase it. Just wondering where everyone got there's and if they had problems with them working with the car they are using them on.

Also, I like the free software thats available. Is it worth it to buy the full version?

    Thanks, Alex

I got mine for $14 from a website that I don't remember right now. It came with all the needed drivers on a CD as well as the demo for the Vag-com software.

The cheap cable will be fine for reading/clearing codes, and performing simple mods, but anything more (RNS-E adaptation, install BT, etc) you'll need the real Ross-Tech cable. Its worth it imo

I have the ebay cable. Came with a CD with free-ware from Ross Tech.

    Total cost, shipped, $18.

I used it for simple stuff like binging seatbelt reminder (OFF now) and light codes.

I'd like the full monty, and I think it's $100+100 FULL software license.

mine is 100% Ross Tech cable software and all.

I feel that it was worth the money. I don't remember exactly how much but it was about 200$. There is lots of stuff the trial version doesn't have. The tool has been VERY useful to me.

Re: VAG cable? Where did you get yours, and how does it work?

It depends what you want - some controllers (e.g. airbags, Bluetooth phone module, etc.) are very fussy and only the latest VAG-COM (VCDS) versions will communicate reliably, and they need a genuine cable.

I have a genuine cable bought direct from Ross-Tech and don't regret a single penny I spent on it. It's 100% reliable and you get great support.
