    Radiator Fan on at Startup

Any advice appreciated...lately when I start my car the radiator fan turns on and will stay on for a while during driving. It will eventually turn off.

Aren't these fans supposed to only turn on when it is hot outside and the engine is under a temperature extreme? Or is my understanding of car cooling physics completely backward?

It is 10 degrees outside here in Maine, and the car is completely cold. The car sounds like the Millennium Falcon when turned on with this fan running.

Any advice on things to check are appreciated. Car is an A4 2004 with 50,000 miles.
