    Need Input on Coilovers

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm Looking for a coilover setup for street use only. From my research I understand H&R/FK/Vogtland/possibly others?, all make good street applications. I'm looking to get the following questions answered for those of you who run these setups.

    1. Range of adjustablility - how much you can lower, both front & REAR (I want to go low)
    2. Ease of adjustability
    3. Stainless steel bodies or not
    4. Ride quality
    5. Price

I know KW, Moton, Penske, JRZ, Ohlin are better for someone who will be racing their car - I'm not.

    I appreciate your help. Thanks!

For basic street use, it's hard to beat the $1k Vogtlands from PureMS.com. Much improved ride quality over stock and easy height adjustibility.

I have heard from countless people on countless forums that Bilstein PSS9s are the best. They have more adjustability settings and have a very comfortable ride. They are expensive though.

    Re: Need Input on Coilovers

I don't know, I've read a ton of good things about the H&R's (plus I'm riding on them slammed).

    * Widest range of adjustment for the money
    * no "highway cadillac bounce" like found on the pss9s
    * the majority of the slammed cars you see are on H&R's (my opinion based on pictures posted on AZ).

Based on posts here and on other sites, I went with H&R. Haven't put them on yet but hope to next week.

H&R are the best for what you are looking for. if you want damper adjustability, you can buy my PSS9. i was thinking of selling mine for $1000 + shipping. send me PM if interested.

    Re: Need Input on Coilovers

Thanks for the feedback guys. What about FK? I've read pretty good things about these and believe they are the only ones with stainless steel bodies.

Regarding the H&R's, how easy are they to adjust (Specifically in the rear)? Also, which H&R's are ya'll running? On awe-tuning.com they show a completely different application for our cars then what's shown on H&R's site.

S4-Berry, No coilovers are easy to adjust on the rear of this car. I think you have to take it apart for all of the different brands. The fronts are supposed to be easy.

    Re: Need Input on Coilovers

H&R's would be my choice if I had a B6.

did the PSS9's on the B6 and although they were good. The fronts bounced a little too much.

    Re: Need Input on Coilovers

You can't really go wrong with H&R or Bilstein PSS9 Coilovers.

Both manufacturers have been around many years and have a solid reputation for building quality products.

    To answer your questions:

Bilstein PSS9s will lower your car 10-30mm (0.4 - 1.2 inches) all around. I just confirmed this with Bilstein.

H&Rs will lower your car from 1-2.1 inches in front and 1-2.0 inches out back.

Between these two, if you really want to slam your car, H&R would be the way to go.

    Ease of adjustability
To echo ieatfishburitos, the rear coilovers on a B6 S4 are going to be hard to adjust no matter the company. You will basically have to remove the coilover, make your adjustments and reinstall it.

    Stainless steel bodies or not
H&R and Bilstein do not use stainless steel in their B6 S4 coilover applications. They choose not too because of its relatively low strength.

    Ride quality
Ride quality is very subjective. What is harsh to one person may be fine to another. I'd recommend getting a ride in a local car with the setup your considering purchasing.

    Price
H&R is lower priced, but doesn't allow you to adjust dampening.

PSS9s are more expensive, but you can adjust the dampening.

In the end, its all about what your intending to do with the car. Since you want to lower your car as much as possible, the H&R coilovers would be the better choice for you.

Both coilovers are currently part of our 2008 Holiday Sale. We're offering 10% off our normal retail price on all H&R and Bilstein products until the end of the sale.

We do? I just checked and our part numbers match up with H&Rs site. Could you let me know what doesn't match up?

Vogtland's are a piece of cake to adjust in the rear. Just uses a 10mm hex key on a long extension and ratchet. Sometimes you can get away without even taking a tire off.

^What he said ... I've got the slightly stiffer Vogtlands by Startup Racing and the ride is far better than stock ... Although I'm set around 25.5" grnd to fender height, there's no problem dropping more than anyone would want with these coils (unless you plan to leave it parked with the fenders resting on the tires).

Alex, thanks for all the feedback. It makes me laugh that you were the only one to actually answer all my questions.

Everything matches up. Initially I was looking at the picture like a moron, but quickly realized they were the same part number. From a customer perspective though, it's always nice to see a picture of the actual application.

I'd like to know a little more about the FK's as well. Do they make the FK Silverlines for the B6 S4? From my research it seems they only make the FK Konig Sports. I'd really like a set of these Silverlines!
