    Headlight lense removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just recieved some used S4 headlights and was wondering if it was possible to swap my lenses sinse mine are much more clear and free of blemishes.

If so is there a writeup on removal (yes I tried searching)?

    Re: Headlight lense removal

The only way I know how to do that is to put them in the oven and separate them. Its part of the clear corner mod look in the B6 DIY section.

    1. Take out your headlights
    2. Preheat you oven to 350
    3. Take out as much parts as you can from the headlights
    4. Put it in the oven for 90 seconds
    5. Try to take off the silicone (if wont work, repeat step 4)

Lads, LISTEN TO ME VERY CAREFULLY:

I mean, pull out all the stops and shove paper clips or toothpicks in your eyes.

DO NOT, I reapeat, DO not ! DOOOOOOO NNOOOT!!!

    bake your headlights.

The lense will go soft and deform first before the glue becomes pliable.

    Use a heatgun ONLY. PERIOD.

I hope I've made myself clear.

I'll say it again if I have to. I want to save somebody from buying a new set of headlights because of this. DO NOT BAKE YOUR FACTORY Headlights. NEVER NEVER NEVER .

Also, the securing bracket (tabs) will come undone and mess up your alignment.

    That is all.

    Re: Headlight lense removal

I used a heat gun on full blast around the entire headlight assembly with no luck at 'melting' the silicone or adhesive Valeo uses(stock Audi A4 headlight) to seal the lense to the housing.

The plastic of the housing will start to go soft waaay before the adhesive starts to soften. Simply didn't work for me.

I used my dremel very carefully and cut the lense(not housing) to separate the 2. It was still somewhat difficult to separate, but I made it happen without damage to the chrome innards.

Work slowly if you do this and good luck.

PS - At all costs, try to avoid any contact to the chrome parts on the inside. That will rub off VERY easily if you try to wipe or clean it with ANYTHING.

I have the same issue as the OP.

I like this suggestion the best (as I already have a Dremel).....

    Will give it a go.

    G'day mate!

If I was in your shoes, I would pick up a dead B6 headlamp, and use it for practice. Of purchase a pair with broken tabs, but good lenses. Try separating these from the casings, and only if you're successful, and feel confident enough to tackle yours, then go for it.

    Best of luck mate!

There's a DIY on this. Search up JOEY MOD. you basically have to peel that upper flap up, then heat everything and it'll come apart. I've done mine and never touched the Dremel, but I don't think I'd ever attempt to do it again.

I did a Joey mod a few years ago and was very unhappy with the results. There's just no easy way to separate the lens from the housing. If you want a different look just pick up a set of Depo/DJ Auto/Helix blacked out housings and transfer your OEM projectors. It will be a lot less work in the long run.
